Projector advice needed! Long 24 foot throw 1080p daytime viewing. Sanyo PLV Z700?

Hello all,

First post! Trying to pick a 1080p projector...

I seems to have the opposite problem than most, my lounge is 26 feet long. The room has two large windows and a glass external door that I plan on putting heavy curtains over, but won't be able to block out all light. I would like to be able to watch movies (and the occasional bit of telly when the missus watches her neighbours in the other room) during the day. It would be ideal to mount the projector on the back wall which would lead to a throw of about 24 feet. The couch will allow a viewing distance of about 15 feet from screen.

I have a budget of up to £1200 (ish.. maybe a bit more, you know what its like..) and 1080p is necessary. I am unsure what size screen would be good (advice welcome!) but it seems that 120" is about the biggest people go. With my long throw, my projector choice seems very limited. The Sanyo PLV Z700 gets very good reviews, but different websites give different screen sizes for my throw so am not sure if it will fit. Also, it (like all the others I have found) will be close to their maximum zoom. Would this projector be bright enough for viewing during the day at max zoom? Can you recommend any others?

Thanks for any help!

Hi there. A 24ft throw would give you 119" screen with 'no' zoom. You do decrease brightness the more zoom you use I believe but that is no problem to you.

With regard to daytime viewing, I couldnt say. I am thinking about buying this projector but I am still unsure. Reviews are largely positive. Brightness is meant to be 'average' on this projector so not sure about daytime watching on a 120" screen. Hopefuly some owners will check your thread out.

Check out this link 1080p Projector Shootout : Sanyo, Panasonic, Epson (hi rez) on Vimeo (which was posted in this thread: Best 1080p projector for around £1000?, also well worth reading)... go to around 5 mins into the vid were they discuss and demo the brightness.

I now use the PLV-Z700 on my dedicated 18 seat home cinema. The flexibility of zoom allows me to house the projector at high level in a booth at the rear of the room with a 7m throw to a 135" diagonal fixed screen. It produces a fantastic result.

Sorry, not much good at these measurement thingys. A 5350mm long room, and a beamax screen viewing width of 2030mm, would the sanyo projector handle this? projectorpoint seems to think it would just about handle it, but would appreciate other peoples thoughts!

thanks

Re: Projector advice needed! Long 24 foot throw 1080p daytime viewing. Sanyo PLV Z700

I have mine at about 11' away and - at nearly full zoom - I get about a 105" screen. I do notice a drop in brightness when I zoom but it's very negligible. Changing the settings manually or fiddling with the dynamic settings will alter the brightness much more than zooming. I will try and take a photo later to show this but I don't know how well it will work

As for daytime viewing I have tried and it's fine but only if I close the curtains. Sky+ (not HD) is certainly viewable without any real issues but black levels really do suffer under these conditions. I don't really think I'll be using it during the daytime so it isn't an issue for me. If it was a priority then I would probably want a projecter with a higher lumens rating. Once it's evening or the room is darker then all the problems go away and I'm left with a stunning image The projector is easily bright enough for movies, games, Sky etc

Re: Projector advice needed! Long 24 foot throw 1080p daytime viewing. Sanyo PLV Z700

Just about to buy one of these Sanyo plv-z700's. I only have an 8.5 foot throw to get me about an 80" on full zoom. Should I have any concerns with the brightness on full zoom? Should I be particular with the choice of screen I buy?
Thanks
