found something great out when viewing films

Hi,
I have a sim2 projector and i use black curtains to black out the room, if i switch the light off the room is completly black, i then put a film on and what happens the room starts lighting up with the projector, i find that i am still a little distacted by the room so i tried something for a experiment i got a pair of glasses and took the lenses out i then had some black card about 2 inches wide and glued it around the glasses and hey presto all i can see now is the film on the projector screen and nothing else it is fantastic i am much more involved in the film in fact i am in the film all i can see is the film. I wonder if anyone else as tried it.

Re: found something great out when viewing films

Do you clip on different shaped cut outs for 1.85:1 and 2.35:1?

I bet you have to keep your head still throughout the movie.

I think I'd prefer the dark non reflective wall covering approach myself.

Re: found something great out when viewing films

You should go on dragon's den and pitch this, targeting all the people out there with projectors who can't help but be distracted by the light reflection.

In all seriousness though, in your moment of crazy creativity, as absurd as it sounds, I can imagine your invention working wonders.. good for you.

Re: found something great out when viewing films

Genius! As we'll all be wearing 3D glasses in 5 years time I'd get your patent in now.

If light leakage is a problem, how about masking the lens on the PJ instead? Get a sheet of black 'Crazy Foam' from a crafting shop which can be cut very easily and with some trial and error you'll have one made in no time. If you decide to put it in the lens hood (like a filter) make sure that you don't push it onto the lens itself as heat may mean it becomes attached.

Other methods of reducing light leakage have included painting the internals of the PJ matt black and screening the whole PJ off which was also good for noise reduction but if done without proper regard to intake and venting requirements could reduce bulb life or kill the PJ. As the equipment has improved these practices have become old news; however my HTB anamorphic lens has the facility to hold a lens mask and came with a sheet of Crazy Foam.

I know most of us found an opportunity to have some fun and laugh at the OPs findings but I think it is quite an innovative start and agree with binbag.

I did something strange some time back with my HD65. The HD65 is very bright and I thought it was looking like a big plasma and there are no IRIS to reduce the light output. One day While watching, it just happened that I looked at the TV screen on my left. The TV was off but I could see the HD 65 image reflection on the TV screen and I was surprised to see how much depth was there in the reflected image on the TV screen. Obviously it was not bright but the perceived depth was phenomenal like you get in thetres.

I took out a blank DVD and held it in front of my eye in a vertical plane to see the reflection of the image on the screen and found something very similar. My wife called me crazy while doing all this stupid things while watching a movie but I found something very interesting.

Give it a try it is something different ...you guys can laugh at me afterwards....

Slightly off topic
Today, we are seeing more and more bright PJs coming out and the PJ market is going up but somehow I have a feeling that there is a trend trend for some to get a PJ for replacement of their plasma or LCD but in huge size.

Though the recommended lumen output is 9-16 ftl for movies, I think many are getting more than that and the satisfaction is - I have a huge plasma....I remember thinking this myself when I had the HD65 and I wrote it in this very forum as well.

But with my new PJ which has IRIS control, I can set it like a huge plasma or a pleasing film like image with lot of depth and I have started appreciating the latter and it gives that sense of depth which I noticed as a reflection on my TV screen months before...crazy me...and my stupid finding...but it pleases me at the end of the day...

Re: found something great out when viewing films

Many people advocate dark walls as a way of improving PQ - the argument being that light will reflect back off the walls and onto the screen, decreasing contrast.

This may be true, but it misses an important point. That light reflecting off the walls will also reflect into the viewer's eyes. The increase in light entering the eye will cause the pupil to constrict - it doesn't need to open as far if there's a lot of light.

Because the pupil has constricted less light gets into the eye, and the perceived contrast of the image will decrease.

The OP's experiment is a way of preventing this from happening, as well as preventing distraction from the dimply-lit room.

The funny thing is, many of us do what the OP has tried on a regular basis. If the sun is too bright when we're driving we pull down the sun visor, reducing the amount of light entering our eyes. As if by magic, our pupils don't constrict as far, more light from the road gets in, and we can see better.

Re: found something great out when viewing films

After many hours of intense R&D I have managed to mock up a pre-production version codenamed 'Masky Glassy'.

I have incorporated Danny1980's twin aspect ratio idea and enhanced it further - all you need to do is simply close one eye for the correct masking to be applied to your presentation.

I also realise that different colour tape may be required depending on your environment. I therfore intend to also offer white masking and supply a range of felt tip pens for DIY customisation - unfortunately this 'deluxe' pack will carry a price premium.

Anticipating the high demand I have started a waiting list for the first 500,000 units - so get your names to me asap so not to miss out - don't forget to state 'standard' or 'deluxe'.
