Progressive scan troubles on a PT-AE100 / Denon 2800MkII

I'm having trouble getting my PT-AE100 to accept PAL progressive signals from my Denon 2800MkII.

NTSC Progressive/Interlaced works OK - with the projector correctly identifying the signals as 525i/525p. PAL interlaced is also fine with the projector identifying the 625i signal.

When trying PAL progressive however the image is all over the place. I can (just about) see in the Picture menu that it is detecting the 625p signal but it seems to have problems locking on to it and it eventually drops the signal all together.

Has anyone managed to get this combination working? Any help or tips would be gratefully received.

Thanks,

Mac.

I've had an Ae100 working nicely with a 2800 MkI so this should work.

It might be a long shot but what do you have your outp[ut device set to on your DVD player? Should be set to multi and not NTSC or PAL as otherwise the Denon will convert to pseudo PAL or NTSC that might not sync with the projector.

Thanks for the reply Ian, the DVD player is currently set to 'Multi' so I don't think that's the problem. I can switch between PAL and NTSC without any problems, it's just PAL progressive that is giving me issues.

Just check that in the Denon video menu, the video output is set to video not RGB as for some reason the Denon doesnt seem to be able to display prog scan pal when the video is set to RGB even though this shouldnt really effect it in any way but it does??

The Scart output is set to 'Video', I found if I set it to RGB I don't get anything out of the component output, let alone PAL progressive!
Thanks for the reply,

Mac.

bigmacx,
this gentleman reported similar problems with the 2800MkII and PAL progressive on a Panasonic LC75 projector, which has the same video electronics as the AE100. Seems like this DVD player may be incompatible with Panasonic projectors...

Olaiho,
thanks for the pointer, I'm beginning to suspect the same thing myself. I borrowed a Phillips DVD player last night and the projector synced to it's 625P signal OK (in the menu screens at least, I couldn't get it to output PAL progressive during a film).
I wonder what it is about the signal the Denon is outputting that the projector doesn't like?
If I really want PAL PS I guess the only option is to buy an external deinterlacer or sell the DVD player and get another one.

Thanks for the help,

Mac.

I found that my projector the 75e as mentioned is not compatible with Pal progressive scan, after speaking to panny themselves they said that they did not have any projector on the market at present that did. A trade show in 8 months should see the first panny pal prog pj being made available. But I will try the suggestions that you have all mentioned. Just to see if this was a load of bull.

As for the DVD player it is outputting PAL prog. its the pj thats not compatible? :-(

Cheers

Thanks for the reply Rob,
I've actually managed to get the projector working with Pal Progressive when using a Philips DVD player and I know other people have got it working using various other Pal Progressive players. It's just the Denon that seems to have problems, have you got a Denon player as well?

yeah the same one 2800 mk2

I am going to try the suggestions here but i think that it is just the pj thats at fault... I have been told that if the you can get an interlaced image from pal, but not a full pal prog image then it is usually the pj.

I'll have another look at the player tomorrow.

i will let you know how i get on.

:-)

RobJohn,
the Panasonic rep you were talking to was misinformed - all the new Panasonic home theater projectors (AE100, AE200, AE300) support PAL progressive. The LC75 also supports PAL progressive, according to reports.

In this case, the Denon player seems to be the culprit.

In my opinion it is Denon's fault. I had similiar problem with my Fujitsu. Before I was using Pioneer 737 and NTSC was OK so was PAL interlaces. When I hooked up Denon with hacked software picture was all over the places diferent though for NTSC and PAL. To be able to watch anything I had to adjust screen position heavilly (height, width, horisontally and vertically). Now I have installed this original firmware from Denon for PAL progressive and this corrected issue that the screen is not off so much anymore but still off a bit - but it is much better now.
here is my previous post (I do not have now idea how to create proper link):
Denon 2800mkII plese comment

As an update to this issue....

I've just tried the latest firmware (thanks to MrC) for the Denon and the AE100 now has no problem locking onto the Pal PS signal. I've seen no problems with lipsync or picture breakup either on the few discs I tried.
