Sony Vpl12ht Additional Filter

Does anyone know what the additional filter that is provided with the Sony VPL12 HT projector is supposed to do.

Has anyone tried it? I have not as the projector is ceiling mounted (out of reach). The manual says very little about it and was wondering if its worth putting on.

Should make blacks blacker at the expense of some brightness.
