Best HD2 DLP Projector?

Before I joined this forum,I used to stop by the AVS forum.

There seems to be a short list/pecking order of whats the best HD2 dlp,my take on this is the following;-

(1) Yamaha DPX1000

(2) Runco 1000c

(3) Sharp Z10000

(4) Marantz S2

(5) Immersive

(6) Infocus 7200

(7) Sim HT300 Plus.

Have any of the members here seen comparisons of the above?

What are the members views on this?

Not tried DPX100O but believe it has potential. Those I know who have seen it can't get it to work properly though.

Runco.....is great with NTSC....nuff said.

Sharp....good
Marantz. Yet to be convinced
Immersive...don't do projectors. Where did you find this?
InFocus: Great value for money if you can put up with geometric distortion of image
SIM2 Great all rounder

You missed out
Barco: Interesting ideas. Should be great. Think the stand alone units partnered with off board scalers should be stonking

DWIN: Best DLP I've seen (but again only with HD and NTSC)
TAW: OK.

The Optoma H76 is due to come out which should beat them all on price. It's full retail price in the States should be $6000 according to projector central.

Cheers,
Cal.

Its interesting you mention the Dwin, forgot about that one!!

What are your thoughts on the Dwin pic quality? Why do you think its better than the others?

The Immersive projector is the Virtuoso(a Nexgen design like the TAW Stealth.)
The Virtuoso is cooking up a bit of a storm mainly because Mr Wiggles is a consultant for the Virtuoso and is pushing it in the AVS Forums! How good it really is...

Why wont the Yamaha DPX1000 work?

Gordon,

You mention some projectors as being great for ntsc, but what about PAL?

Are DLP projectors not good with PAL SD? Will the new PAL 562 DLP chipset help (like the toshiba 500 and infocus 5200?)?

What are your views on the nec ht1000?

I learn something new. The Nexgen I saw in TAW room with their scaler wasn't that hot. Didn't know Mr Wiggles was in on the act. I am interested in finding out more about the product and have been investigating.

Never seen a NECHT1000 in an environment that was conducive to making an informed decision as to performance.

DWIN: I thought it was best because it had the nicest image. Simple.

I am not saying the DPX1000 wont work I am saying that the dealer I know who has tried it had ...issues....with some facets of its set up.

There is nothing inherenetly wrong with DLP that means it wont work with PAL. It's just that many manufacturers are from Far East or USA....which are NTSC countries. Perhaps this is why they seem to devote so much attention to making units perform well with this material at the sake of good PAL performance.

The InFocus 5200(5700?) looked OK to me.

What is Geometric distortion ?

Hi Gordon

Could you please explain what you mean by geometric distortion, when you refered to the Infocus? I had been considering going along the Infocus/Toshiba route, so would be interested in your comments.

Many thanks

Jason

I would guess Gordon is referring to the lens barrel distortion which causes 3 sides of the image to have a barrelling effect. You can read more about this anomaly (which is inherent in the lens design and agreed by Bob Williams of Infocus it is a compromise) at the following thread.

No probs. I must say though that the image is still fantastic but the edge distortion did nag me a bit when I had a demo unit.

Barreling...

Hi guys,

I am considering buying an InFocus 7200 or the Toshiba MT8 clone, but was slightly put off by the barreling issue, which seems widely reported.

My question: any owners out there find it to be a big problem, and secondly, the press release for the new 5700 states that there is no barreling on this model - anyone able to confirm this?

I was thinking if the 5700 has cured this problem, it may be a better bet?

Thanks all.

The 5700 has the new dcdi+ chipset with a 48hz mode as well as many other tweaks which the 7200 lacks.

Anyone know if the 5700 is available yet and where at?

Hi there,

I am using the Marantz now for 4 months and have to say it beat the SHARP hands down when I compared them side by side. I also had a look at a Runco (can't remember exactly which model but was twice the price of the Marantz) and the S2 still looked better to me. It has very little motion artefacts, a very smooth film like picture, excellent build quality, sealed optics and a shorter throw ratio than most other DLPs in that range. Have not seen the Yamaha as it was not available yet at that point in time.

That's my two cents woth

Cheers
Tom
