720p v 1080p

Hi all.

Just wondering if in the budget end of the market (sub £1k) whether its actually money well spent getting a 1080p projector over a 720p?

I've been looking at the HD65 and HD700x and they seem really good value and decent projectors with decent images created.

I actually have a 1080p LCD so used to the quality provided but to tell the truth unless i'm using it as a pc monitor one is hard pressed to tell the difference between 1080p and a 720p image.

Is it worth spending 2x the price for a 10% improvement in image clarity?

Re: 720p v 1080p

theres a lot more to it than just the pixel count, ie .. contrast, colour wheels, sharpness, dc processors, quality of the lens etc ...

personaly i just sold my HD75 (which i loved) to raise the bar in the sharpness dept, im going for an X10 full HD jobby.

if the image is as good as my old HD75 but sharper i will be as happy as a sand boy ... whatever one of them is

I think you just answered your own question?

I'm also after a 1k projector but I don't think its worth spending the extra money for just 10% difference.

Re: 720p v 1080p

There are many factors to consider here.

Like many, I upgraded to 1080 from a 720 PJ. The 720 PJ was the awesome Optoma H78: virtually silent, amazing picture, and easy to install...
I upgraded to the HD80, noisy (like all the new optoma's/infocus'), damn difficult to install (correctly), and allot more money at the time.
Was it worth it? In a word, YES.
I would love a quieter machine but without going LCD (errrrrhhh) or spending twice as much money again it's not worth it yet.
The picture is much better... the more I use it the more noticeable I find it. The resolution is a step forward, and this in turn gives better colour, contrast, and depth to the image. If you are close to the screen, then any pixel grid is so small you wont notice it any more.... then there is the bigger question..
Would you not be sitting there for months afterwards thinking to yourself, 'I wish I had bought a 1080 PJ so I know I'm getting all the data from my HD source'. It's the same for HD audio... less than a 10% increase in noticable quality... but everybody wants it for piece of mind I guess??
Initially I admit I wondered why it was worth it, but I was feeding the PJ with a rubbish signal from an old BR player.
The HD80 can be picked up for about £800... It's not that much more than a good 720p machine really.

Maybe I should have added the 'Second Hand' bit in that sentence

But I have not bought a new PJ yet, and I don't intend to either. What's the point when there are so many SH bargains from honest folk on these forums.
