Thumbs down DHL charges - Arghhhhhhhhhh

I just got wacked for £797 duties for my zv10000 from Pricejapan.

Import duty at 14%: £321 and vat at 17.5% at £459.

I was hoping that it would be exempt from import duty but the code of 8528302090 Computer display projector used by pricejapan levies 14% duty.

What a bummer!

Is there nothing i can do apart from paying it?

I definately paid 0% duty on my AE300, I don't see why your zv10000 should be any different, it was clearly marked a 'Computer display'. I'd definately give DHL a call to try and sort it out.

All computer gear is 0% duty (That's why the PS2 comes with a copy of BASIC, so it's a computer and not an entertainment product and thus Sony avoid some tax)

No escaping the VAT though

You can use this site to check it out.

http://www.sloanefox.freeserve.co.uk/importukduty.htm

It may be that PJ classed it as an 'Other' device thus attracting the 14% tax. If it were classed as an LCD device it would have been 0%.

I just spoke with DHL and queried this as I have 2 x pjs from PJ due tomorrow and she said if it is classified incorrectly I can query it with them and they will check it with the shipper.

I would suggest you drop a note to kaneda asking him to ensure if anyone asks he classifies it with the 8528 3005 00 code and then when DHL check they can amend.

Good luck.
