1080P \ 80" Screen ?

I have a 720P projector at the moment, and was wondering if you would think that I would see a great deal of difference with a 1080P projector on a 80" diagonal screen ?

I am sitting about 10 - 12 feet away.........Thanks !

If all other aspects of performance of the 1080 pj i.e. Contrast, brightness, colour, video processing etc and the display tech is the same I doubt you will notice much difference due to res alone.

You are likely to notice more difference due to the advances in other key areas on the 1080 pj's.

Re: 1080P \ 80" Screen ?

Thanks for the reply........

So,would you bother upgrading from 720p to 1080p ?

And if not for resolution.what other keys features should i be looking for in a 1080p projector ?

What aspects of your current pj do you have a problem with ?

Personally areas such as contrasts, sharpness, natural motion, accurate colour reproduction, black level and lack of technology artefacts (mc, motion smear, shading, rbe etc).

I don't have any problems with my current 720p projector.......

Thanks Avi.............I think you have answered my question !

I just thought that a 1080p picture on a 80" screen might be better, thats all.

Re: 1080P \ 80" Screen ?

I think because it is impossible to separate the raft of other technological improvements from the increased resolution alone, you should simply ask 'will I benefit from a newer projector, regardless of resolution?' The difference between my old 720p Screenplay 7205 and current 1080p HC6000 is night and day for any number of reasons, not just resolution.

That said, I have 1080i and 1080p sources and I must say, I do think you would notice the difference after a 720p machine. It wouldn't be noticeable all the time, as it's rather dependent on source material, regardless of what resolution it's being played at, but when there is a difference to be seen, my word! What a difference.

Cranford, BBC HD. The way tiny motes of dust in light through windows, drift in and out of the plane of focus creates a layer of 3D detail that wasn't even visible as detail at all on my SP7205. Resolution alone? Possibly not, but as long as I'm now seeing this sort of detail it would seem reasonable to expect that it plays it's part.

Re: 1080P \ 80" Screen ?

That's the key through: source material. There is not enough FULL HD material around at the moment on broadcast, cable, satellite and disc. And SD material upscaled is not gonna make anyone jump from 720P to 1080P - you do need better source material to actually have take advantage of the 1080P,

So this debate will live on until the content industry gets its finger out and makes 1080P material far more available and at lower prices. But at the moment they seem much more interested in cramming more lame channels full of old material onto their platforms that putting newer and better quality feed on the existing channels.

But for the moment, I would think that there is no great rush to get a 1080P unit watching at that distance. Especially with so little HD material available, compated to vast amount of SD out there.

The best way to answer your question is to see some 1080 PJ's first hand with a range of familiar test material if you can.
