just got the HD75 and ......

its jaw droppingly fan tastic ... only tried it with blinds and curtains drawn, so tonights viewing should put me in a happy coma.

having gone from a HD65 to sanyo Z5 to this, it has certainly raised the bar.

got it with fantastic service from nik at CVS media for a gob smacking £620 delivered.
if your looking for a new 720p jobby, then dont hesitate, there is a new daddy on the block.

to be honest i was hesitant about the HD75 because the spec on paper was not that different to the HD65 to justify the extra £200'ish .. i dont know what magic optoma have put in this PJ but jeeeez it works

Is this the replacement for the HD70? It's hard to keep track with all the model numbers.

How did you manage to get it for that price? It's £799 on CVS media web site.

Re: just got the HD75 and ......

So glad I found this thread. I couldn't believe what you said about the price of this PJ tabs, so had to see for myself. Contacted Nik last Thursday, he offered me the same price, (unbelievable!) Ordered Friday, got the PJ Monday morning! It's now Wednesday & I'm still totally gobsmacked with the performance. I can see some rainbow's, but only when I'm looking for them. I used to have a Panny PTAE100E LCD PJ, but there is simply no comparison with this machine. So thanks for that mate, I couldn't quite have run to the full £795, even though it looks more than worth it.

Re: just got the HD75 and ......

I was 100% set onthe 65HD because I can't really stretch my budget to £800. WHat is so different between the 65 and 75? Will I be dissapointed with the 65, even as a noob to projectors?

Thanks

ps. How would you compare the 65HD and the Sanyo Z5, considering you have owned both. Is the Sanyo worth the extra couple hundred quid?

Re: just got the HD75 and ......

If you can't afford it I wouldn't streach to it. Although a more expensive projector will always be there and provide some benefit, no single step up the lader is a quantum leap over another, the differences are more subtle espectialy with decent calibration and room tweeks.

For the money the planar 7010 should be a step up from the HD65 and arround about the level of the HD75, although there are likely to be differences that benefit one over another in certain circumstances. If you can demo, do, otherwise I'd say any home cinema projector is better than non*, as the step up from that is more subtle. One big difference may be with RBE, the more expensive DLP models are less likley to show rainbows, which would make a night and day difference if you were afflicted.

*With the exception of so called game projectors or most (LCD) models older than 3-4 years.

Re: just got the HD75 and ......

Hi,

just a small point but the bulb cost is always a good thing to factor in, the bulbs for the Planar are about £300 ( rated for 4000 hrs ) the Sanyo Z5 about £190 and the HD65 bulbs are £125 ( 3000 hours ). I always think it is something people forget to check out when purchasing

Mike.

Thanks mate. I think the fact the 65HD seems to get good reviews and the bulbs are cheap in comparison means I will go for that one

Re: just got the HD75 and ......

I'm not so sure the cost of bulbs come into it, from a poll we did some time ago most people never replaced their bulbs, and those that did mainly because the thing poped, which is something of a lesser occurance these days and mainly for those who bought second hand (used bulb ect).

4000hrs @ £300 is 7.5p per hour (compare that with cineam rates) and about 2 and a half thousand films worth, so if you watched 1 a night it would take 7 years before the bulb would need replacing, also equivalent to 5 and a half months if you left the projector on 24/7. If you used it instead of a tv for 8 hours a day (which is pretty unlikely) you'd get about a year and a quater out of it. I'd rather have the better image quality now and accept the potential bulb replacement when it happens, several years in the future. But it all depends on how much you're gonna use it.

I think generaly most people upgrade before the bulb needs replacing

Agree with you. I am with my 3rd PJ now and I have changed PJ every year. I bought a replacement lamp for my H27 but sold it along with the PJ without even opening the box.

I think the general feeling of bulbs being unreliable and expensive at the same time makes us think while buying a PJ.

Re: just got the HD75 and ......

hi tabs/guys

having followed this and the hd65 thread started by anibap, i'm afraid i've got to ask what is probably an obvious question: why is the hd75 considered so superior to the hd65?

tabs has mentioned the fact that rainbows are pretty much non-existant on the hd75 compared to the hd65, but i can't work out why (being a projector noob)

from what i can gather the hd75 has the same speed colour wheel as the hd65, which is why i can't understand why the rainbow effect is less. is it due to the configuration of the internals? or is it because the hd75 is simply less bright than the hd65?

similarly, the blacks offered by the hd75 are again an improvement over the '65, with the hd75 on one other thread being described as a completely different beast to the hd65 and others.

i can see that the price difference is quite significant (less so with the cvsmedia discount), but looking simply at the stats, the hd75 'appears' to offer nothing over the hd65 other than a speaker. any advice to help educate this noob would be greatly appreciated

Re: just got the HD75 and ......

I can't say anything on how they would look different but on spec the HD75 has slightly better contrast. HD75 also has a better build quality.

I I were you I would go for the best DC3 720p like the IN78/ Planar 7060 over the HD65 or add some more and buy a 1080P PJ around £1000-£1300 mark
The Infocus X10 is available at £900 odd (great price for a 1080p) and may turn out good.

With prices coming down like this investing in a DC2 chip at nearly £800, to me will not be a good decision. A good DC3 would cost the same.
The IN78 is perhaps the best <£1000 DC3 DLP in the market.

As for my HD65 I am very pleased for the price I paid.. 3 friend of mine visited my place after looking at screenshots I posted here and now they all have the HD65. In 1 year time or less I can sell it and get a good 1080 p (hopefully they will come down in price)

well. all in my opinion....Better see and judge yourself. Try to see a demo of the HD75 and you may get hooked like many others who bought this.

Re: just got the HD75 and ......

thanks anibap, as always you're a top man for making the effort to reply

i see exactly what you're saying, but i have a few minor probs in trying to sort out my requriements.

1. i'm limited in my ability to demo any pj's let alone specific models. my local dedicated hc shop is audio excellence and they only have an IN76. (i'm in swansea, south wales)

2. i would readily go for a 7060/IN78 pj, but am concerned that they require batcaves to offer anything like their true potential. the hd65/hd75 is appealing due to its apparent brightness and ability to offer a decent pic in low level ambient circumstances, which the other two models don't appear to.

i'm against lcd's at the moment, simply because from what little i've seen and read about dlp pj's they offer the most cinematic pics available for the money.

i sound like a right moaner here but i'm really appreciative of everyones replys to my increasingly whining posts (thanks again anibap). i just wish i lived somewhere decent for av gear where i could view a few different models

cheers

I owned 3 PJs and the only 1 I demoed was the first one the H27 and sa it againts the AE900, Z3/4 and the Hitachi. pic wise the H27 to me was way better.
The last 2 PJs i bought based on reviews. In most cases modern PJs are very good and there is very little difference between them other than value and premium models and technology used

the In78 is a very bright PJ. My friend has a IN76 and he watches footy with lights on and it is watchable.

All my PJs till date are DLP and I will buy a DLp again. Need i say more? Jokes apart, It is again preference. Most like DLPs image but some suffer the RBE. So demo both if you have not found out already if you are prone to RBE

the HD73 is DC3, so i expect the HD75 is the same ?

actually scratch that, the HD73 is higher up model with DC3 by the looks of it.

HD75 is DC2 but will give a great image despite that (the HD72 was considered by many to be better than its replacement HD73, the former was DC2 and latter DC3)

Re: just got the HD75 and ......

http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/05/i...ctor-surfaces/ and the chips is only a very weak indication to the performance of the projector *edit: although you could say that if your gonna use a newer/more expensive chips your gonna put effort in else where, but it appears not when its a budgetish model like the HD73 was (for dc3 anyway).

I read recently that Darkchip 3 has better ultimate black level, but a Darkchip 2 is capable of a better shadow detail, so it depends if you want it black or to see whats in the black (which obviously applies elsewhere as well as just 'black shadows').

The HD73 was a diapointment as far as i've heard (good but not as good as expected). I haven't seen any professional reviews of the HD75 or seen one in person so can't say.
