You will find it hard to find a bad review on any of the current projectors, especially if any slight shortcomings are balanced against the price.
The HD1 is certainly a fine projector, but it does have its faults and it depends if those faults, however small, are important to you.
I sold my HD1 and replaced it with the Sharp XV-Z21000, which also has its faults, but overall I am much happier with it. Each to his own.

AVI and jaco5, give the guy a break, he asked if there are any tweaks not faults. Dont spoil his excitment before he has received it.

Klacey, I also have an HD-1 not a lot of tweaks needed its pretty good out of the box as I am sure you know, that is unless your looking for perfection.

Enjoy

Re: Just brought jvc hd1.

Thanks Mick, i appreciate all comments so what Avi and jaco5 had said will not be ruining my day. Im not looking for perfection so i would think this projector will blow my mind, i didnt even get to demo it first, as my local sevenoaks is no more. But i trust and appreciate peoples imput on the forum, it was these guys that won me over.

So its your fault if i dont like it.

I didn't reply to the quote you have selected.
Read the post again and my reply. I said that it is a fine projector, but no projector is faultless.
Most people read these forums to acquire knowledge from other peoples experiences. I could have said, I owned an HD1 and it is faultless. What purpose would that have served?

Only trying to help. I assumed he hadn't demoed the PJ and thought it might be beneficial to read the feedback from another owner. At least that way he can check it out and return it (assuming it's covered by distance selling regs) if it bothers him rather than it becoming an issue later and being stuck with it.

Re: Just brought jvc hd1.

We've sold a few of these and they are a fine projector, you should be very pleased with it.

Treat it to a good power lead. They respond very well to a £100.00 Wireworld mains lead.

To make it truly great, save up for a really good scaler like a iScan VP50 Pro or Pixel Magic Crystallio. Both of these will make it a 10k projector beater.

Enjoy yourself.

Thanks hi-fi man, i was thinking of buying a scaler, i wasnt sure how much of an improvement it would make, is it really worth investing in one?
The power lead is something i will get.

They will allow a higher degree of calibration than can be achieved via the JVC settings alone. That said neither of those VP's will enable the JVC to achieve proper colour calibration. If you want to be able to correct the JVC oversaturated colour gamut the only current solution is a Lumagen Radiance of soon to be released (in the US) JVC VP. If you're not looking for perfection in terms of calibration then it's probably not worth the investment as the internal Sigma VXP processor used by the JVC does a decent job.

No problem. You're not seriously considering a £100 on a power lead for the PJ are you ? IMO a better use of that cash is a decent UPS unit that will not only filter the mains but protect the PJ against power cuts/brown outs that can damage the lamp or reduce it's life.

Re: Just brought jvc hd1.

I've had my HD1 for 4 months now which replaced my IN78. It's a great piece of kit. I calibrated it using DVE and it didnt need a lot. I still get that wow factor when watching movied on my 7ft Grandview screen. Hope you enjoy the PJ.

APC are a decent manufacturer of a range of UPS/conditioning products http://www.apcc.com/index.cfm. Depending on how much you want to spend there are different options. For the HD1 a unit around ~800VA/500w should provide some headroom.

Hope eveything is Ok with the PJ. Some things I would check before putting hours on the lamp are the levels of misconvergence (MC),chromatic aberration (CA) and uniformity/shading. These vary from unit to unit and if it were me I would want to ensure it was a "good" unit in this respect. Some dealers check the units some don't so unless you check the unit before puchase it can be a bit of a lottery.

Re: Just brought jvc hd1.

just got mine yesterday. loads of ambient light in the room, projected onto woodchip magnolia wallpaper - but it still looks beautiful.

watching in the daytime is impossible, but at night it throws out amazing colours and brights.

only thing that bothers me is when the scene is very bright, the blacks and shadows do seem to wash out. but as i said i am watching in a very uncontrolled enviroment and not on a screen.

having said that when I turned my Pioneer 506 plasma back on I thought the black levels were even worse on that than the HD1 - and i'd always loved them before. i guess you can just look too far into these things.

mind blowingly good projector for a novice like me. bluerays and games looks utterly fabulous.

Re: Just brought jvc hd1.

Must admit I've had no experience of the Lumagen Radiance. It may be an absolutely incredible piece of kit. So I can only comment about what I've actually used as opposed to specifications that I cannot see the reality of in front of my eyes.

Under these circumstances then I must admit that I have found the previously mentioned scalers to make a very worthwhile difference.

I'm sure the Lumagen Radiance would also do the same (and maybe better) as would other products that I have not tried, I can only comment on the ones I've actually tested.

Either way you should really enjoy your JVC. Don't get bogged down in what may be listed as downsides, just lap up the spectacle of your new purchase and its many many positives.

Have fun.

Under these circumstances then I must admit that I have found the previously mentioned scalers to make a very worthwhile difference.

I'm sure the Lumagen Radiance would also do the same (and maybe better) as would other products that I have not tried, I can only comment on the ones I've actually tested.
Both are very good video processors but they just don't have the capability to resolve the biggest documented issue of the JVC (HD1/HD100) which is the oversaturated colour gamut. JVC have come under much pressure over its "design decision" that they are releasing a modified version of a DVDO VP product that has presents to correct the colour gamut to industry standard. Lumagen also recognised a requirement for this type of feature and developed a full primary/secondary GAMUT adjustment feature for Radiance. The reality is readily seen if you measure the PJ's primary and secondary colours and look at the CIE diagram. If only it were so simple to objectively measure the benefits of a £100 mains cable on video performance.

I'm not trying to say the Radiance is a better VP than X just that it has a capability that they don't and this feature is very relevant to the JVC issue. So if your looking to calibrate the JVC HD1/HD100 to industry standards it cannot be completely achieved with the VP's you mention.
