Rainbow effect test

Hi all - have just found this test for use with your projector to see if you are succeptible to the RBE - it is just a small percentage of the population and this site even makes a tenuous link to sufferers of motion sickness - it would be really interesting to discover if this is the case!!

Re: Rainbow effect test

In terms of an actual test to see if you are susceptible to rainbows it is complete but I have to say its about the best " rainbow test " I've seen yet.

Best advice, just go and have a look at a DLP projector for real.

Supposed to be used through a PJ i believe not on your PC which will not have the same effect - could be useful to use test in a store, friends etc to see if DLP is for you!

Yeah. Missed that crucial point.

The test is even more pointless than I realised.

Why is it pointless? Take the test to a dealer to look at your possible projector purchase to test your own susceptability to rbe - saves guessing at film clips to test this.

If you already own a PJ then yes it could be considered pointless as you would already know if you get the rbe effect from YOUR PJ so whats the point testing yourself!?!

This is aimed at those people who are considering buying a PJ and visit this site only to be panicked by all the talk of various flaws and problems you COULD (not necessarily will) experience with different technologies - surely it is of benefit to these people and may save them from making a costly mistake. If you have another idea or suggested film clips for testing this problem it may be helpful to share them with everyone.

Re: Rainbow effect test

They only true way to tell if you can live happily with a DLP projector is spending a few hours with it in your own home cinema and watching a wide variety of material.

I have bought a DLP projector in the past after an extensive shop demo only to find that the RBE was much much worse in my cineme than it was in the shop. The opposite of this could also be true and it depends on a whole host of factors, screen gain, ambient light control, DLP colour wheel speed and so on.

If you use this test in a shop demo with a DLP projector, I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of the viewing population observed rainbows with this very harsh test which isn't truly representative of most viewing material.

As the top option will generally cost you a restocking fee or other charges, the next best option of course is to demo at a shop, take along a range of material, good rainbow inducing material are films like Sin City, light sabre fight scenes and so on. I'm sure a quick search on this forum will reveal many.

Finally though the best option of course if you're worried about the issue and/or are buying blind, buy an LCD or LCOS projector instead but bear in mind that they have their own issues too.

Hope this helps.

Yeah this seems more helpful to those people in the market for a PJ - good suggestions of film clips by the way. A much more constructive response than "thats pointless".

this test is to take along and try on a PJ (mates or shop) to see if you suffer from them if you also take ZAG's advice on film clips these should show if you can cope with DLP or not.

By the way haven't i seen your name in the optoma HD65 forum?? Great PJ isn't it. Just got one myself.
