Still Looking for that 1080p

Hi All,

Firstly, hope you all had a good Christmas.

This break has given me time to surf the net looking for the replacement for my HS50.

DLP designs are out due to their limited zoom and lack of lens shift (otherwise I would have bought a H81 from Morgan Computers)

My projector shelf is 5ft high and the HS50 lens is 3.3m from my 96" screen.

As I have said before I like the Mitsubishi HC4900/6000 but can I find a local dealer.....!!!! Im not brave enough to buy unseen/undemoed.

The Pearl is overpriced as we all know and I wont buy out of principle, the HD1 will require a larger shelf thats no biggie so thats in the running, the other option is the PT AE 2000 (I would consider if Panasonic have cleaned up their act regarding service they where so bad when I had my 700 that the dealer I use wont stock Panasonic at all, and they are not a small dealers)

Anyway Im waffling, so to cut to the chase

1. Does anyone know of a dealer in the NW who stocks/demos the Mitsubishi?

2. Panasonic owners whats your experience regarding warranty and service?

3.Is there any other machine I should consider (I see BenQ have launched some new machines)

Many Thanks in advance

Regards

John

Re: Still Looking for that 1080p

Some questions first:

What sources do you plan to use?
Is your room light-proof?
Is your room decoration light or dark?
Is that screen size 96" diagonal or width?
Are you bothered by rainbows?
Are you bothered by fan noise?
Would you consider importing?
Do you need to audition before buying?
Can you use advice from here instead?
What aspects of PJ performance matter most?
What aspects matter least?
Can you fit a bigger shelf?

Nick

Hi Nick,

Exam time eh...lol

My source is a Denon 3930

The projector is in my living room so sometimes there is ambiant light

Room decoration is light cream

The screen is 96 diag

I have a Optoma 709 as well which realy shows the rainbows so I guess Im susceptable.

As for fan noise Im looking for as loud as my HS50 or lower

I would consider importing (US company on ebay has the blackpearl for £1800 hmmmmm)

But I do want to demo, I keep reading the forums and everyone has their own preferance and I want to make my own decision (cripes their are people out there who think the Morris Marina was a good car.....).

Im looking for the best picture quality vs price

Yes I can fit a bigger shelf, Stands Unique do some..but it has to be in the same position eg 5ft high, any higher and I will get a shadow from my living room light....any lower and I bang my head.

There we go.....Phew......

Oh checked out the BenQ projectors and the zoom isnt enough for the distance Ive got......doh

Regards

Well,

Im booked in for demos of the AE2000 and the HD1 this weekend at Ray Jowelets.

Looking forward to it......I noticed they have the VW50 for £2600 would that be worth considering?

Hope you enjoy your demo's.

IMHO that price for the original Pearl is too much....you mentioned in your original post that you wouldn't buy the Black Pearl out of principal (price). What makes its predecessor any different?

Re: Still Looking for that 1080p

Think the HD1 is my first choice, just have to rearange the living room,

I still think the Pearl is over priced, I just noticed the price today and at first glance it looked tempting hence the question but after giving it more sensible thought even if reduced the VW50 is still too expensive as well as all the potential problems as mentioned on other threads(for another £600 I could buy 2 VW60s from Japan or the US) I just dont like being ripped off.

Got to admit at this price range its a minefield....

Looking forward to the demos, I will take my own 3930 as a source and a selection of discs...hopefully they will provide the brews....lol.

John,

Have you ever seen HD-DVD or Blu-ray material? Are you considering investing in this technology in the (near) future?

IMHO 1080p projectors shine with HD material...a decent upscaling SD-DVD player is okay however you aren't going to get the real benefit of the pj.

Just a thought.

I do like the sound of the Panasonic PT-AE2000 1080 projector...

But at £2000, and the amount that I will really be able to watch it, I am contemplating the AX200 and save the £1000

I need to find some where which can demo both side by side...

Adrian

Re: Still Looking for that 1080p

As for Blue Ray and HD DVD Im still waiting for the format wars to settle yet.

I will make do with my trusty 3930, but Im going to try BD and HD when I at the demo...

But I will wait a bit before I take the plunge into Hi Def.

Quick note: What I find amazing is the variance in quality on video transfer on SD, "Cars" as we all know is amazing but some mainstream films are dreadful, are the film companies turning down the bit rate on SD discs to make us want Hi Def??!!.just a thought.

I don't think so....transfers can be excellent or ropey on any medium. That includes HD as well.

Re: Still Looking for that 1080p

I have just been living with the Epson TW2000 for the past 3 weeks and its been used in a dedicated room thats not been decorated to a cinema standard but will be soon. I was lucky and took advantage of the what hi fi show special price of £1975, its not been formally reviewed yet, but for me its awesome and my source is a ps3. I only have a handfull of blue rays and the quality is great, but what has surprised me is the quality of an upscaled image through the ps3, dependent on transfer of course, but most new dvds really do shine through this system and the diference between sd and hd is not night and day as others have said, its certainly not the impact of vhs to dvd the ps is upscaling to 1080p and doing a stellar job.

Im a noob, and perhaps i will be more critical on my next upgrade, but as you are already living with a pj, you probably have a much better idea of what you will like.

As said previously umpteen times go demo, not allways practical, especially with so many PJs in the 2k price range I was looking at. My advise devise a budget and stick to it otherwise their will allways be another step up in performance untill you get to likes of the sim2 c3x. I had a 2k budget and as most dlp would not fit in the space and lack of lens shift and the danger of perhaps others being susceptable to the dreaded rainbows I dismissed them.

But if you are looking for the next best thing and budget allows I would strongly recomend viewing the new JVC HD100. If you go for the hd1 you may wish you had gone for the 100.

For me it was down to the Epson and panny and their was not much in it, the pictures were better with more 3d pop on the Epson, for me, but this was marginal, what sealed it was the aesthetics, the panny is big and ugly were as the epson looked quite smart and sleek, which of course makes no difference in a darkened room in ideal viewing conditions for a pj but im still a bit of a tart, I have also got a 3 year warranty on the bulb and pj, and epson are supposed to be have good after sales service. Havent needed it yet tho! Wish you the best in your search, but if you can get a demo of the Epson at a reasonable price it should definatly be on the shortlist. The price issue is being discussed on another thread here.

Happy hunting.
