Smile Projector in loft conversion. Here is a pic

I started this in another thread but figured i'd start a new thread for it.

I'm moving into a new house, it's approx 5400 square feet this room is ideal for a projector.
Because the rooms are strangely shaped there is nowhere else really suitable for one.

Im using an attic room approx 14 feet, by 18 feet, the rooom can be completed blacked out, the floor is carpeted but the walls are white / plastered. the roof is the shape of a house roof (i.e. the room is not a square box shape).
Here is a picture i've just uploaded

The screen I am using is 7.6 Feet wide,

Painting the walls black is not an option so i'm tied into fabric / speaker fabric.

A few guys had mentioned maplin do it in three different sizes - how much would I need to hang it around the room? estimated price per meter etc.

Thanks in advance.

Wont speaker fabric be expensive for the whole room? Why not use curtain material? try your local market.

The room looks like it has the ability to be a superb space. I would kill for dimensions like that, make sure you get the room walls as dark as possible. Whichever material you choose just make sure its dark. The picture quality of your projector is governed by this. Enjoy the process.. from my own experience, if you can't afford the peice of equipment you want wait until you can. If you buy something cheaper you'll only regret it. I did.

Here's a link to the Maplin speaker grille cloth where you can work out some pricing... http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?...7725&doy=19m11

I have samples of the two thicker fabric at home, and I will be using the thickest, which has a nice felt feel to it. Both look pretty good for the purpose, but I reckon the thicker one will be slightly better for light absorption. I'm actually considering covering my entire Bat Barn (30ft x 15ft with 14ft vaulted ceiling) in the stuff. At £2.50 for a 50cm x 150cm length, I don't think it'll cost the earth, considering the benefits. Fixing it up, on the other hand, might drive me completely crazy.

I just did some quick & dirty calculations, and I reckon I'm looking at around £250 to do my room. Your's should come in less than that...maybe around £150-£180 I reckon (ballpark).

Just off topic I bet this material is just the job for masking a 2.35:1 screen

Great stuff

Wow! what a great starting point for a home cinema set-up...I already have a dedicated room but when I see a space like that my jaw just drops...

Have fun, as if you need to be told!

Cool mate! fitting together might be a nightmare I thought about maybe having some pieces sewn together overlapped?
But then I thought about just pinning them to the walls.

Any methods that existing users have used?
Thanks in advance.

Take some pictures at each stage and then keep posting the pics, it would be good to see the changes to the room as it progresses and then see the finished product.

One question, I maybe having a muppet moment but what is the light source in the left hand corner? There is a bright light but no plug socket near by and it can't be the flash from the camera. What is it?

My guess is a Velux window in the top right side of the roof, making sunlight shine on the wall?

Excellent room, looking forward to seeing how it progresses.

The light in the corner is a velux window, i've ordered a complete black out blind for it.

Here is the room from the other view :

For anyone who cares here's the house :D.

Re: Projector in loft conversion. Here is a pic

I'm sorry. I would just paint the walls and ceiling a matt black. Your talking less then 50 quid in paint and the effect would be extremely dramatic.

Why can't you paint it black?

Re: Projector in loft conversion. Here is a pic

Even matt black paint has a slight reflectance too it (as does blackboard paint) which is why I used the Maplin felt speaker cloth when I did my room (the paint also marks easily). I used wooden battens wrapped in velvet to attach/clamp it to the ceiling and stapled the leading edge to the plasterboard sloping ceiling. It works very well giving the screen a floating in space look since the cloth doesn't light up much at all, so you don't really notice it, only the projected image.

serial45
Just a friendly bit of advice re your picture sizes, not everyone is viewing with screens large enough to do justice to your pictures, myself included as I use a laptop so I end up having to scroll the image.

1000pixels wide is generally sufficient tbh

Re: Projector in loft conversion. Here is a pic

Great space for a home cinema. Do it justice and paint the walls as dark as you can. Matt Black is ideal but a deep red or dark browns are a good compromise.

Love the look of the house too, it has real kerb appeal. Good luck serial45 with your move and subsequent HC build.

Re: Projector in loft conversion. Here is a pic

My cinema is painted top to toe in matt black paint - with a black carpet to boot

Still surprising how much of a reflective 'sheen' appears though - as Gary mentions.

In the end it's just paint and can be easily rectified if it needs to be converted back to 'normal' use !!!
