Advices on Sony Vpl-Hs50

Hey Guys,
I am just to buy a new projector, and someone has offered me a SONY VPL-HS50 for 200Euros with a cell mounting included; but as the PJ is 2 years old, i have some questions that i couldn't solve searching on google..

Does anyone has this PJ? How good is the image quality?

I would mainly use it for XBOX 360, HD Films and PC Games..

I would also like to know if it would fill a 150"screen with no bright loosing, and if i need a very dark room to watch it clearly on that screen...

ANd.. does anyone has some pics of it running? :P

Thanks everyone!!

Ander

Re: Impressions on Sony Vpl-Hs50

Hi

I have a sony hs50

Its a good projector - and I play Xbox360, ps3 (with bluray) on it. For 200 euros its a bargain.

My screen is 106" and it fills it fine and its definately bright enough on my screen. I use a 1.8 gain greywolf 2.. I would have thought it would be a bit dim for 150" though- that is a very large screen. Most people have 120" or less (and ideally around 100"). Note that the greywolf 2 screen has glass beads on it - so the picture can seem a bit sparkly - if you are a purist and wouldn't like the hot white effect of this screen you may be better off with a regular screen. I do like the greywolf2 though, particularily for Xbox360 as the games (particularily the 1st person shooters) have more depth and black level with this screen.

Set the xbox360 to 1080i and PS3 to 1080i.

I do rate the sony hs50. I had a Panasonic AE100 and AE500 before. The black level is very good for the money - but still very dark grey rather than black - you'll need to spend a lot more for a full black level.

Final note: there are some alternative settings to try for the picture - do a search on HS50 on the avsforum.com. I did find these settings to give the picure more brightness and punch. I don't remember the settings. Note that you'll need to go into service mode on the HS50 to do the changes, so its at your own risk. On the thread on avsforum it tells you how to get to service mode, and a few people posted settings to try.

I also play pc stuff on it - the pc desktop is very sharp. Just set the graphics output to 1280x720 and 60 Hz and its perfect.

Hope you enjoy the projector!

There is an updated model the HS60 - this had a bit better contrast and black level.

Re: Impressions on Sony Vpl-Hs50

Thanks alistar!!

I was looking for a fixed screen; do you recommend me to get a screen with high gain for 150"? I will be seated in front of the pj...

About the settings, i can't find the post, i put sony vpl-hs50 in the search mode but can't find it..

On the other side, can it handle 1920X1200 of resolution (i know it is 1280 native, butg i have seen that some 720P PJ accept 1920 throught dvi or hdmi)

Thanks!!!
