Yes the Sony's picture is still amazing and friends still rate the SD TV display the best they've seen. I suppose I really got the upgrade bug last year when the VPL VW50 got rave reviews. No local demos available, not even at the Sony shop so I called at the New York Sony store while on holiday last August. Usual shop lighting, slightly subdued. Certainly not a bat cave. Source material? A cable transmission of a western which looked nothing like the claimed HD. Staff detected my accent and probably realised I wasn't going to do a deal. Nearby was a plasma set with a brilliant display of a bluray cartoon film. I guess they sell more plasmas.
Then on return I noticed the new PJ market entrants and was impressed by the reviews of the HD1/RS1 and its competitors at

Since when I've been an avid reader of every comment on AV and AVS forums.
I quite agree that a demo is the ideal way to go about confirming that a particular PJ is for you, (that is me) but when you live in a town where none of the JVC listed dealers stocks the HD1 let alone has it on demo you know you'll have to take a lot on trust or put in some serious mileage. As for finding a dealer with the HD1 and the VPL10 running side by side, well it's a nice idea but I guess my chances of winning the lottery are just a tad better. I did read somewhere that across the pond you will find dealers who allow you to take out a PJ to try for a day or so and compare with your present PJ. but in the UK?
I had been saying to myself that once the HD1 dropped below £3k I would make the plunge and I see tonight that is exactly what has happened. I think I'll sleep on it especially as her indoors is now happy that the 'please replace the lamp' warning has disappeared for good on the VPL10!
