Searching for 1080P DLP for motion simulator

Hi

Wonder if you can help - I am seeking advice on what are my best options re sourcing the best DLP HD1080P projector for the following?

It needs to be quite small and light

Throw of less than 2 metres

1080P ideal but could go less

It will be installed into a motion simulator and therefore will be exposed to up to 1.5G acceleration - are there other options re bulbs etc to take these sorts of forces?

see here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKLzNATdxms

Any suggestions appreciated -been looking at the HD70/80

Re: Searching for 1080P DLP for motion simulator

Just wanted to add

This projector will be running PC/ video games only so and ideally will run at 60hz or better

I am open to any recommendations - which projector is my best option for a motion simulator and why?

I would think you'd be better off with an LCD flat panel strapped to the simulator rather than a projector. I don't think pjs are designed with that in mind.

Was that D-Box system they were using? On closer I don't think it is.

No, not the Dbox thing

You can see these guys use a projector so it must be possible - are there any other options on bulbs to reduce how fragile they are?

LCD is not ideal due to size / weight limitations

I will build dampening into the projector but just need good options

thanks

I'm not sure if the G-force data is available on the projector spec sheets, but you may find out from the manufacturers themsleves if you contact them directly.

What projector do they use on the rig there? Can you use one of those since it seems to work OK? There is a small LED based projector available for under £500 but you'll need a high gain screen like the High Power or the Grey Wolf II, especially if you have any other light in the room. I've never seen any bulb options other than the type of lamp they come with. The other limiting factor may be the throw - I don't know if the mirror they used effectively reduced the throw of the projector or not but it's a very short throw and that would limit the range of suitable projectors.

OK, I will check spec sheets for G once i have a short list of projectors to look into....

The projector used in the Force Dynamics rig shown in the clip is a lower resolution projector which is about 3 years old - i assumed that the game had moved on a lot since then and think there must be much better, high res solutions for a lot less money. I mean, my Damn H78 cost me £3500 2 years ago- you can now get more for £2000!!

With regards to throw - I am working on the basis that I should go for a projector with a throw of around 2 metres - this would allow a positioning of the projector behind the seat and then bouce off the miror to hit the 50 inch screen. The issue will be the distance from the drivers eyes to the screen which will be a little less than this - but those figures can be played around with

So is my only real option for around £2k for a DLP 1080P screen the H80 - what are my other options at this price/spec?

cheers
Jon

ProjectionDesign projectors are used in flight and driving simulators so may suit your needs. You wouldn't get a new one within your budget but it may be worth checking out ebay for second hand units.

Re: Searching for 1080P DLP for motion simulator

The H80 has a fixed offset - will that be a problem or can you do something with the mirror seeing how close it is?

Re: Searching for 1080P DLP for motion simulator

Hi - thanks for the Projection Design heads up - i have contacted them and will progress this

The mirror position will be adjustable so anythings possible - just asking what are my best 1080P options? Not sure how offset will be affected

Re: Searching for 1080P DLP for motion simulator

Just an update - i am in discussion with Projection Design but wanted to know if there are any other options. For more details see above - but in summary I am looking for a 1080P projector that is robust enough to go onto a motion simulator

I would really appreciate different views

Even just a list of 1080 P Projectors or a place where i could find a few list - i can then contact each company

Thank you

Perhaps we can help. SIM2 manufacture projection engines for the Command & Control industry. We have a series of engines that fit into rear projection cube assembly's therefore have very short throw. Our engines are designed for 24/7 operation, automated lamp replacement etc.

If you want more details please contact me at alan.roser@sim2.co.uk
