Any point in bulb renewal?

I have heard of so many projectors that have lcd damage before the lamps have gone so is there any point in thinking of renewing the lamp when it goes as the projector has probably suffered some damage of its lcd panels, which replacement costs are not worth considering . Is it not better to buy a new projector as you will have a new lamp too.I personally only watch a film on my projector only ounce a month so expect it to last a very long time. Opinions would be appreciated.

No, once your JVD-HD1 lamp has worn out, the PJ is worth nothing, send me a PM and I might have £50 for you

Well my Z4 PJ is on it's second bulb, over 3500 hours gone and DVDs and games look fantastic.

Once a month? If you get a PJ and a good DVD player, plus surround sound, you will be watching a lot more movies than one a month. A lot more!

Re: Any point in bulb renewal?

Hi depend on the age of your projector and your pocket. If the lamp blows on your car, you don't have to change your car, just depends if it clapped out or not. If the picture was fine before the lamp went then why not get a replacement. If the picture was poor and your ready for a replacing the projector then you have to make a call. But first see if a replacement lamp is worth it.Try these people they might be able to help you decide. http://www.aalighting.co.uk/projector_lamp_dropdown.php
If a replacement lamp is available for the right money better to replace and carry on or, you can sell on rather than bin it. With not knowning what make or model you have it hard to make a call.
Best of Luck

Re: Any point in bulb renewal?

I have an epson tw10h which i use for 360 gaming and for watching football in the garage/bar. You can pick these PJ's up for about £200 new on ebay. The bulbs are £100. The epson has now become a bit too dim to use in the garage/bar so i just use it in the study for 360 gaming.

To replace this PJ i have spent just £220 on a sony vpl-es3, brand new with 3 year warrantee. Has got 2000 ansi so will work well in the garage compared the 1200ansi of the tw10h with a new bulb.

So instead of buying a new bulb, i have spent an extra £120 and got a new brighter PJ for the garage/bar and have also still got the tw10h to project a smaller picture in the study for the 360.

As my projectors are budget, entry level models, this serves me well. If you have an expensive PJ, then the new bulb may be the better option. But also bear in mind that if your PJ is quite old, you may find that a budget PJ may outperform your older model.

Re: Any point in bulb renewal?

I think the OP may be referring to organic LCD panels, which do decay over time, and the rate of decay can be affected by heat, which is always an issue with PJs. AFAIK, latest generation LCD panels are inorganic, and don't suffer this problem.

But as the OP will not need to replace the bulb for 8 years or so, it's likely a new PJ would be a good idea, as per Mr. Frog's suggestion.
