JVC DLA-HD1 – HCC Official Review

I have just received my Home Cinema Choice: Issue 140in the post this morning.

As I have a subscription it normally arrives up to 10 days before it hits the shelves so I though I would share the findings of the JVC DLA-HD1 review with you all.

I'm not sure of the legalities of posting the exact review (copyright and all that). So I will have to keep my comments to a general synopsis unless the forum moderator can confirm that I am allowed to make exact quotes from the test or post a pdf of the actual pages.

The gentleman reviewing the JVC has absolutely no negative comments about the projector, he is completely blown away by it's performance and has never seen such deep blacks on any projector, let alone something at this price point.

He goes on to say that it makes the very impressive Sony Pearl look 'inadequate' and even trumps the Ruby for performance.

He finishes the lengthy review by warning LCD and DLP projector manufacturers, basically telling them that they should be shaking in their boots.

FINAL SCORE:
Brightness: 4.5 stars
Clarity: 5 stars
Features: 5 stars
Overall: 5 stars

Awards: HCC BEST BUY GUARANTEE

I didn't have any doubts about this wonderous machine even before this review, now it's officially in the press as the best money can buy in this price range and way beyond. I hope the other reviews follow suit.

Re: JVC DLA-HD1 – HCC Official Review

It looks like the JVC will drive the market for awhile until somebody else releases something better for cheaper.

Re: JVC DLA-HD1 – HCC Official Review

I highly doubt you can scan it as pdf and upload it as that would be a breach of copyright and as AVForums got the scoop on this unit it wouldnt take long for somebody to come charging in with a complaint.

But you may be able to post some text snipits

HCC put the reviews on-line for free anyway. I think provided you credit them with the review you should be OK.

Re: JVC DLA-HD1 – HCC Official Review

The deep blacks sound great. I wonder how long it will be before the price drops for this technology to more consumer friendly levels.

If they could release a 720p no frills version for around the £1000 they would clear up.

Re: JVC DLA-HD1 – HCC Official Review

Having now taken ownership of one of these I too am truly impressed with the picture quality.

However, nothing is ever perfect, and there are two thing that are spoiling my enjoyment. Although I suspect this is common to most projectors.

Firstly, its far too noisy for me and thats in normal lamp mode. In high lamp mode its a non-starter. Can anyone recommend soundproof enclosures to put it in?

Secondly, the video delay seems to vary depending on whether its receiving a 1080i/50 or 576i/50 signal. I presume its to do with the video processing, but the problem is it affects audio sync. Unfortunately, as both these signals come from the Sky HD box, the only solution I can think of is to split the optical out into two and put different delays on each feed into the surround amp. This also means switching audio amp input depending on whether its an HD channel or not. Does anyone have a smarter solution?

AIUI, there is also the ability to use the component input for VGA with an adaptor?

JVC Scandinavia is getting a small qty in at the end of February. It is best to check with your dealer whom you ordered from, and ask them to check with JVC Denmark if your ordered unit is amoung the allocated first shipment.

Set your Sky HD box to output 1080i only (i.e. change the HDMI output from Auto to 1080) - let the box do the up-conversion, that way you have the same delay all the time.

Re: JVC DLA-HD1 – HCC Official Review

Guys,

I had to remove the full HCC review that was posted here. This is a current issue of the mag and a breach of copyrighted material, if we just posted all the content up here, why would anyone buy the magazine and we would end up being sued.
By all means discuss quotes from the review, just please don't upload PDF documents or cut and paste the entire review.

Thanks!

Re: JVC DLA-HD1 – HCC Official Review

Sorry folks, no harm intended. Suffice it to say the review is the most glowing review I've seen for a projector in a long time.

Anyone buying this outstanding projector should be most happy with their purchase (as seems to be the case).
