Smile Top ten projector films

Ok this might start a debate but I am new to the PJ forum and currently improving our AV set up.
Jeff @ Horsham hifi has been brilliant at helping me out with our complex set up.
This is subject to opinion but excluding Sports, sky, TV etc what do you think you should have as the top ten must have DVD films to appreciate the projector experience with Dolby surround in all its full glory.

Re: Top ten projector films

Just watched, King Kong and MI-3 in HD-DVD on the projector and they looked fantastic, I always think you need a big creature or wide scenery to really make a big screen worth while. (Oh or Kate Beckinsale... )

Battle of Britain, Midway, the searchers all look good in SD-DVD for some older films on a PJ.

Re: Top ten projector films

OK, I'll throw some in which appeal to the kids in all of us too!

The Incredibles
Monster's Inc.
I, Robot
Serenity
King Kong
Batman Begins
Contact
Independence Day
Gladiator
Madagascar

Remember these are movies that look good on a large screen, I do not claim that they are all good movies per se.

Re: Top ten projector films

A little off topic but the "best DVDs" are pretty well covered...

I was glad to see someone mention "Battle of Britain", loved that movie! The transfer was excellent for a film of that age. I hope the original is in good enough condition to allow a HD transfer. Hopefully, they will spend some time on the sound track and add some surround effects as well as expand the dynamic range.

Another old war flick I want to see on HD is "Tora! Tora! Tora!". "Lawrence of Arabia" deserves a great transfer also.

I won't hold my breath waiting on Disney to do a great HD transfer of "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea". The SD DVD transfer is horrible; the movie deserved better!

Band of Brothers looks great
The Proposition (although not necessarily a top movie for entertainment value it did look great on the projector).
Films with lots of colour, such as Cars, Monsters Inc, Hoodwinked etc all look fantastic on a large screen

Re: Top ten projector films

[QUOTE=maddogmc;4334730]A little off topic but the "best DVDs" are pretty well covered...

Ummm, unless I have mis-understood the above, Battle Of Britain was re-released 2 years ago fully re-mastered but more importantly also in DTS. The surround sound is excellent and I use the first 5 mins of the film as a taster to whet people's appetites when they ask "What's it like watching a projector?" type questions. Also worth checking out on this film is the bit two thirds of the way through where Ian MacShane goes to London to trackj down his family in a night time blitz. You need darkness and bright elements all at the same time. A good test for a pj and remember "They got the Rose and Crown!"
Other films that have been re-mastered etc include A Bridge Too Far and I'm pretty sure that if it hasn't been released this month, it soon will be and that is Tora! Tora!Tora!. I saw this at the cinema when it was released. The gimmick was that Sensoround! The seats really did vibrate when the planes were taking off! Try hmv.co.uk and click onto the war section within their dvd range for more info on other films info.

For what it's worth, having had a pj now for 3 months, I really do love watching films on it. Here are my suggestions.

Where Eagles Dare now Ģ5.99 has also had the 5.1 treatment but the pq was great...loads of mountains and snow are made for the big screen!

Cars now on dvd, also really impressed. Pixar have really done a great job with the colour backgound especially with the scenery that surrounds the town on Route 66. The racing scenes should blow you away. I suppose that if my step-mum can say, at the end of this film, that she was hoping the 2 cars would fall in love then the PJ really has done what it is supposed to do!

Batman Begins
This is also a reference point to check out all the blacks especially during the first few minutes of the film.

Band Of Brothers. I have only watched oned episode so far on PJ (episode 2...the DDay Landing and first skirmishes for the 101st). You felt you were actually there as the PQ on the pj drew you into the action.

Re: Top ten projector films

When it comes down to it, action films are the most enjoyable on projectors because there is a lot going on and they normally have a pretty good audio score too.

My choices would be (i am male incase you can't guess from the below list)

1. Lord of the Rings - Two Towers -final helms deep scene
2. Master and Commander - Far side of the world - opening scenes
3. Monsters Inc - whole film, exercise scene really amazes
4. Matrix - training fight scene and of course the lobby scene, watch the bullets almost fly around the room
5. KingKong HD - t-rex scene
6. Terminator 2 HD - whole film, too many projector moments to count
7. Usual Suspects - just a really good film either way
8. Saving Private Ryan HD (off skyHD) - normady beach, need i say more, if you don't check for holes/blood on yourself afterwards you need a better setup.

This actually quiet hard, so many good films but which ones do i show people because i want them to be impressed.

9. Gone in 60 Seconds - lots of fast motion, that makes you start moving in your seat to the action without realising.
10. Bourne Supremacy HD-DVD - whole film, projectors make especially great car chases and fight scenes

11. Swordfish - 1 too many but the initial explosion with the ball bearings is terrifying on a big screen.

Martin,

My humble apologies. I completely missed the re-release! All I have is the original so I need to order the special edition ASAP unless they are going to do a HD-DVD version soon!
