Strange choice. The tx300 is LCD and there are a lot better LCD PJ's out there for the money. On the otherhand the HD72i is DLP and is one of the best in its price band. Why did you come bring it down to these two.

Nevermind, I thought of the AX100 and HS60 that would be good units to demo at that little extra cost.

Re: Hitachi PJTX300 v Optoma Themescene HD72i

i have the TX100 (the TX300 older brother) and i really notice the screen door effect because it is LCD, but it is a very good projector because there is so easy to adjust everything.

but i think i might go for DLP next time...

Re: Hitachi PJTX300 v Optoma Themescene HD72i

I have the TX300 and chose it over the HD72i.

We had a family trip to demo the HD72i and i have to say it was very impressive. The main problem was rainbows. Not really a problem for me but the wife and daughter noticed them bad enough to turn the Star Wars disc off. Also i noticed that the HD72i was very noisy and because i have to have the pj right be me i had to take that in to account.

The TX300 is a lot quieter and obviously no rainbows. Screen door is not noticable to me at a viewing distance of about 1.6x screen size away. Easier positioning of the projector was also taken into account.

If rainbows were no problem then i may of gone for the HD72i, its main advantages being better blacks and better warranty. I am very happy with the TX300 and don't regret for 1 minute buying it.

These are just my thoughts on the two and the best thing is to at least demo the HD72i with all those who watch it and see if rainbows are a problem.

Although not having seen the HD72i, I am a happy TX300 owner. Very quiet, no screendoor for me and very "tweakable".

I'm sure you'll be happy with either

I think some of us TX300 owners need to start a tweakers thread, so we can swap settings!!!

That's true. However, rainbows are an interesting phenomenon. When I first got my HD72 I saw rainbows, but after a couple of days I saw fewer and fewer. Within a week they were all gone. Somehow the brain attunes. So I think it's important not to dismiss DLP just because one can see rainbows in a demo if you've not really spent time with DLP before. For some people, however, the rainbows never disappear - fair enough. For the majority who find they don't have a problem with rainbows there are great benefits in moving to DLP IMO. Having moved from the Sony HS10 to HS50 (both LCDs) to the HD72 I appreciated the deeper blacks, improved contrast and higher fill ratio (less screendoor). I just couldn't go back to LCD now...

Hi canary Jules! How come you are upgrading to the HD73 ?? I thought you would of just upgraded to a 1080p projector in a year or so when the prices come down. You just inpulse buying as you want the a new toy to play with ?

Re: Hitachi PJTX300 v Optoma Themescene HD72i

Before I plumped for my TX300 LCD, i went and looked at a couple of new DLP's.

It had been two or three years since I'd last looked at one, and that had been a very basic data PJ - not something designed for home cinema.

Less than a minute in the retailer's demo rooms was all it took. The first one I saw just gave me a headache... then, more out of interest than any intention to buy, I looked at their top-notch DLP (which would have cost me over ten grand!). That one gave me a headache and made me feel like I was going to throw up in about thirty seconds!

Re: Hitachi PJTX300 v Optoma Themescene HD72i

Yeah, a bit like that! The HD72 is a phenomenal pj, top of the crop IMO at it's price range for the past year, but I got itchy feet again! Cheaper 1080p pjs would be nice and maybe they will drop to the level of a current 720p darkchip3 in a year or so (I'm not so sure they will but am willing to be pleasantly surprised!), but if I wait another year the resale value of my HD72 will also drop too - so no real advantage in waiting then. Also, I changed the layout of my room which means that my left and right surrounds are slightly further forward so unless I want the rear effects to be in front of me I have to move my seating forward meaning slightly increased SDE. I understand that the Darkchip3 in the HD73 has a slightly improved fill factor and Benji at DiscountTV did a mini review for me which confirmed this, so with that and the improved contrast I've decided to jump. Now I might be changing PJs every year (just hope the wife doesn't read this - oh, hold on, she doesn't know where the power switch is!) .

Really, someone should do a PhD on rainbows and why certain people see them and they never disappear, why others see them and they eventually go, and why others never see them at all. Anyone up for it?!!
