Hitachi TX300 plus Sony DVP-NS76H

Just got my first PJ, Hitachi TX300, plus I've updated my DVD player to a Sony DVP-NS76H. Got it connected up via component (until my HDMI lead arrives!), and already very impressed. (Big step up from my old CRT!)

I have a query about the best way to set up this combination, and am looking for the advice of anyone else with the same setup (or with a TX200, since it's supposed to be almost identical). And, yes, I know I could play about and work it out for myself, but I just thought someone might be able to save me some time and effort, and I am new to a lot of this technology.

So - I assume the HDMI connection will give me the best PQ?

Which device should I get to do the upscaling, and to what resolution?

Anything else I need to tweak in the settings of the DVD player or PJ (I've already seen the gamma etc settings recommended for the TX200 elsewhere in this forum).

Also - this is for occasional film viewing use, so I'm not going for a permanent ceiling mount (that would make my nice shiny new desirable projector a little too visible from the pavement right outside my front window), I'm just going to set it out on a table or stool when I need to (probably mark the position so I can put it back in exactly the right place). I've already noticed that the vertical lens shift doesn't shift up a great deal - am I better off keeping it level and setting it on a slightly higher table rather than adjusting the feet to angle it upwards (and therefore ending up having to use keystone)?. I also assume that the PJ needs to be aiming perfectly perpendicular to the screen? Sorry if this is basic stuff, but the manual isn't too helpful on basic positioning stuff.

Please assume I'm a (fairly) ignorant novice!

HDMI is superior and all digital...

What screen are you using ? I would suggest a hi-gain model @ 2.4 gain in a 92" - 100" size would be the max depending on light controlled environment .

www.eastporters.com has tremendous screen deals ...

Why would you suggest a 2.4 gain screen?

Just wondering

Re: Hitachi TX300 plus Sony DVP-NS76H

I got one of these installed and have to admit it's a fantastic projector for the price. One of the mags reviewed it last month and recommended all the settings and I'm sorry I can't remember which Mag but will post if I can find it. My installers set it up so will see if I can dig the settings out and reply. I use a Pure AV HDMI able that's spot on and worth the money and let my Amp (Denon 2807) manage the upscaling.

The best thing about this projector for me is the lack of fan noise, I had a Sony VPL-HS10 before this and it sounded like a Eurofighter on backburner boost in quiet bits of films but this one you genuinely struggle to hear it.

Just waiting for my 360 HD drive to turn up tomorrow to see some films in HD now

Ok. Its just I've never really heard of anybody go over 1.8 gain. Also, don't you get a much narrower viewing cone the higher the gain?

Re: Hitachi TX300 plus Sony DVP-NS76H

Thanks for your replies - and yes, don't forget those settings from whichever mag it was (I notice that in the Jan 2007 'What HiFi and whatever' has a review rating dated Dec 2006 - could this be the magazine?).

In answer to the first quesiotn, I'm currently using a 80" 'Hitachi' screen, cos it came free with the projector, and it'll certainly do me for the time being. It isn't bad actually - pull down mechanism is a bit tempremental, but the build quality seems pretty good for the price (ie £0.00). I don't want anything bigger because of the size of the room and the fact that the screen fits across the inside of a bay window. No idea what the gain is - all I know is that it's white, with a slight shine to it. Quite happy with the brightness of image I'm getting, but then I'll only be viewing in the evenings, and with pretty good blackout (wooden shutters).

On another point that probably belongs in another forum (feel free to move it), my Sony DVP-NS76H from Amazon turned out NOT to be multi-region, despite Amazon's claims. Returned it for another, which was also not multi-region, so I'm sending that back too for a refund. Amazon costumer services have said "this problem is more widespread than they intially thought" - meaning that they're clearly sending lots of DVD players out that are not multi-region even though they're described as such. Whether they normally hack them themselves, or get someone else to do it I don't know. I realise I could do the hack myself, but not without spending an extra £10-20 on a OneForAll remote that I don't really want. Anyway - there's now a (hopefully multi-region) NS76H on its way to me from Superfi instead, and I'm not sending my Amazon one back until I get this.

My HDMI cable arrived this morning, but I'm way for a few days - looking forwards to trying it out when I get back home. Am I right in thinking that length is not crucial for a digital cable like this (within reason)? - it's unlikely to pick up enough noise over a few metres to have any impact on the data stream.

Yeh i was looking at the ns76h, and i noticed that when amazon say this player is "multiregion capable", they mean after hacking it with a one for all remote. Very misleading.

Does anyone know how the tx300 compares with the panny ax100u?

Really.

I was thinking about ordering one from them as my multi region NS585 came from there a couple of years ago.

That is true but for most of us with 2 rows of 3 seats it is more than enough of a cone starting at 12 ft back for first row also is the sweet spot for 1080P
