so chaps - if you are prepared to wait til c Feb 07 (read, 'havent got a clue how i am going to find the money, but at least i have a bit of time to try..!'), which way would you go, given:

would like 12 ft wide screen @ 16:9 in mainly magnolia room (shuttered windows) and not a big fan of 'cinematic - ultra dark image' - ie pj will need power (pj can be mounted anywhere up to ideally 18 ft and will need to b quiet)

also like to see the definition rather than a fudged 'smooth' image

If that was my criteria, I'd be looking at the 1080 JVC (700+ lumens calibrated) with a Da Lite Hi Power screen. The pj will have to be mounted around head height for best results from that screen though. If you will have ambient light in the room, or want better contrast from scenes that have both bright and dark components, a grey screen with gain will be better.

Personally, I'd be happy with a 1.3 gain screen as that will allow for acceptable image dimming (to me) as tha lamp dims with age. If you want more brightness, the HP or similar high gain screen will be needed, or a brighter pj

If you prefer a more detailed look, you'll have to go for a DLP (or LCD without smoothscreen), and a bright one at that. 1080 won't be in your price range for DLP so you'll be looking at a 720 model and there are plenty to choose from, though finding one with a genuine 700+ lumens calibrated may be the trick...
