Re: HD70 / AX100E demo in London???

DistortionNat,

How was the demo?

I think that projectorpoint.co.uk have an office in Richmond and could arrange a demo. They seem to have an excellent reputation but I don't know whether that alone can justify their prices. I'm also looking at the AX100E but their price inc. VAT is almost £300 than several other sites. I think they pixel check each projector but is that alone worth the extra cost?

I cant remember the name of the shop, but i was at one of the electrical dealers on Totenham court road on sunday. and they had both on demo. its of the shops on the left as you come in from the Oxford street end. its on the first floor. Sorry i couldnt be more precise.

Good luck with your purchase.

Re: HD70 / AX100E demo in London???

Hey guys, unfortunatly I havent been for my demo just yet. Im still waiting for my blasted money to come through (the joys of being self employed!) but Im hoping it will be very soon.
I asked the guy at Krish about pixel checking and he said he was fine with that. So if I like what I see I will be cracking open the box in store and testing my unit before I hand over the cash.
Got to say the prices at Krish are very good, £915 now, seems to be coming down in price all the time. A good few people on this forum have bought from them and say they had great service so Im pretty confident.

As soon as I have anything to report I will post back.

Re: HD70 / AX100E demo in London???

Krish have the 2,

The viewing room is not the best as it lets in a fair bit of light. I saw them on 2 separate days but could have A/B'd. I didn't take my own DVD which was a mistake. I should have taken Empire strikes back as all the snow & black at the beginning is a great test.

I kinda decided on the Pani after viewing the HD70 due to placement options, long throw/fixed offset. If you go to krish look for the fag packet tilting the PJ down so that the image hits the screen at lens height. To be fair he did mention it was limited in terms of placement.

He didn't want to give me the remote for the HD70 for some reason so I used the PJ buttons to play a bit. It was set to its brightest settings when I arrived.

For some reason the pani looked better to me, now I have had a very brief look at it at home I am very impressed, brightness blacks , colour all seem good.

HD70 looks & feels like a budget effort with regard to build etc. Panni is a lot more sturdy.

He opened the box & I demo'd the unit, checked it for dead pixels. He said I could return it after the weekend if I found stuck pixel or major fault. I hope I don't have to do this !

I paid £920

Can't wait to play/setup more

Im kind of ok with the room letting in a bit of light coz I will be sometimes using my PJ with some ambient light, so thats all good for me.

I have pretty much got my heart set on the Panni as it goes, people keep going on and on about how great it is, plus I had a demo of the Infocus IN76 DLP and I did see a few rainbows here and there and I found the image a little taxing on my eyes. I think Im going to find LCD is best for me.
But I will know more when I get my demo..... still waiting for that damn cheque!

Im glad the guy in Krish was helpfull as regards the dead/stuck pixel issue. When speaking to them on the phone last week they said that I could test the unit in store and also if I got it home and found any pesky pixels they would swap it over for a replacement. I just hope they dont say this and then decide to deny they ever said it if it actually comes down to it! £915 is a fair bit of cash to me and my wife and 2 kids budget so I want to be happy with my purchase.

Re: HD70 / AX100E demo in London???

The panny ax100 is a fantastic projector. Its my first projector after stepping up from a CRT. When paired with a £150 screen (from ebay), for £915+£150 you will have a cracking setup - a setup that will beat the pants off the 42"+ LCD/Plasmas that seem to be popular in this country.

Originally, I was all set to buy the 55" SXRD. After seeing it in the flesh I was so dissapointed. For £2300 it just didnt have the "wow" factor I craved. I then switched my attention to the Panny AX100. When I got it home and set the whole thing up, it had the "wow" factor in bucket loads.

After owning the ax100 for a few weeks now, I have to say that I wouldnt buy those 42" lcd tv screens unless they were doing them for around £400 - £400 is what a good 42" LCD is worth in comparison to a ax100+screen for £1100.

Another point to note about the panny is that it is very bright and even in when the living room lights are on, I can quite happily watch images from this projector. Lesser projectors may require you to create bat-cave like conditions; this one does not.

Oh and I also bought mine from KrishAV - I was in and out of the shop in less than 5mins.

Re: HD70 / AX100E demo in London???

Ater years of thinking( ) deciding on Panny ax100....

my room is 3.5m wide...5.2m long..probably go for a 2m wide screen/image

how far off centre can the projector be placed and still get "straight" image? ie how well/far does horizontal shift work.

I'm asking cos it can't be mounted direcly behind sofa on wall...

Ta

Re: HD70 / AX100E demo in London???

Mount it on the ceiling then. The lens shift can shift left and right, but not by much. I think really its a fine tuning feature. You must try your best to get the projector dead in front of the screen and then use the lens shift feature to fine tune.

Re: HD70 / AX100E demo in London???

I went into town at the weekend with the intention of coming home with an Optoma HD70 under my arm. The room is ready, the audio equipment set up and I'd read reviews and helpful threads here and elsewhere. My decision, so I thought, was made.

The thing is when I got the shop they had the Optoma set up side by side with the same picture feed as three other projectors, and Epson a Toshiba and the Panasonic AX100. To my eyes untrained the Panasonic just blew the Optoma away. Much easier on the eye, more natural colours, just all round Better. The only thing I'm not sure about is that the Optoma seemed to have a kind of wavy pattern on flat areas - like grey sky for example - and I don’t know if that is normal for this projector, or a fault with this one, or something to do with the signal. The guy in the shop couln't help because he couldn't see it. Any ideas on this?

I might have to live without a proper screen for a while but for me there was no comparison between the two. The price difference was substantial, nearly 600 euros in the shop so I suppose it's to be expected. I've seen one on eBay for 1350 euros, which is about 900 of your pounds. I'll be using component since I have no HDMI equipment.
