Projector Cable Question

I'm seriously considering buying a projector in lue of boxing day coming up.
I Dont knowto much about then (I have been poking my nose around FAQs to get acquainted)
My question is if its possible to Watch normal TV on a projector, and also what would I have to buy to make this possible?
I dont have HDTV cable, just the basic stuff.

TIA
and sorry if this is posted in the wrong place, I didnt know where else.

Re: Projector Cable Question

depends wot PJ u was looking at getting.
will depend what connections it has.

but most should have vga, component, s-video. compositive..

newer ones will have hdmi.. and u might even find some that have scart too.

maybe even dvi....

anyways a set top boxshould work, but depends how u connect it.

if set top box via scart to a pj. that doesnt have scart.

u could go for a scart to component converter.... though they are around £50 - £70 i think.

wot make/model of PJ did you have in mind ?

and what would u be planning to connect to the pj ?

Re: Projector Cable Question

I've just got a projector and yeah they're absolutely fine for watching tv on. Lights on or off doesnt really make much difference either. I'm not sure how other projectors would fare but my hitachi does the job.
Definitely worth getting!

Re: Projector Cable Question

I was looking at the Hitachi PJTX100
As for Inputs: 1 x DVI/HDTV, 1 x D-Sub 15RGB, 1 x Component, 1x S Video, 1 x Composite, 1 x RS232C

Or possibly Hitachi PJTX200
Inputs: Composite, Component, DVI, HDMI, RF, S-Video, Video, PC

I will be using it for
video games and dvds etc (so the Composite inputs)
TV
Possibly hook it up to my computer too, but its not a big deal if it can or cant.

Re: Projector Cable Question

Composite is the worst connection you can use!! So avoid if at all possible.

The order of connections from best to worst are:
HDMI
DVI
VGA
Component
RGB scart
S-Video
Composite

If you have Sky+ then S-Video is your best bet (assuming the PJ doesn't have scart)
If you have a DVD recorder, then they usually have scart in/component out capability which works reasonably well. Otherwise, as mentioned, a scart - component converter is a good option although brand new these converters cost around £70.
Games consoles are available with component cables which offer the best connection route and computers will work via VGA or DVI or even S-Video.
Your best bet with a projector is to invest in Sky HD in my opinion. Once you've witnessed HD on an 8ft screen, ordinary TV looks rubbish!!
If that all sounds too expensive, then look for a projector that has RGB scart socketry such as the Infocus In74 or the Panasonic AE900 to name but two. This way, you have the best and most direct route from TV/VCR to projector.

Good luck!
