Sony Pearl and Wierd Colour Band

Hello Guys,
This may be normal, but I am just wondering if its anything that should have me concerned...

Running the vertical lines test pattern on the DVDO VP50 (alternating columns of one pixel wide black/white lines) I can see a purple blur down the edge of each black line and can find no way to get rid of it.

You cant really see it back from the screen, but can right up close - it seems me that the colours aren't lining up or something?

As I said - this may be normal...?

Re: Sony Pearl and Wierd Colour Band

Actually, I can see this happening everywhere, mainly where there is sudden change of colour from one pixel to the next...

Re: Sony Pearl and Wierd Colour Band

Difficult to say without looking at it, it could be a very slight panel alignment issue, or it could be chromatic abberration of the lens. Given that you can see vertical black lines it suggests that the issue isn't particularly bad (probably within Sony's tolerance for this type of issue).

If it doesn't affect the picture on real world video material at a normal viewing distance I wouldn't worry about it. Obviously, if it is bothering you, you should talk to your dealer.

Its really hard to show, but on this photo you can just see the purple blur down the right of each black line...

Re: Sony Pearl and Wierd Colour Band

Done a bit of reading, seems that one of the panels (or two) are 1/2 pixel out...

I wonder if there is way to fix this by adjusting the picture.

Re: Sony Pearl and Wierd Colour Band

1/2 pixel if that, looking at your pic. It's a bit tricky to say from just a photo and it's up to you, but I'd probably consider that acceptable; I doubt you'd ever be able to see it in non-test pattern material, and probably not at all from a normal viewing distance.

Re: Sony Pearl and Wierd Colour Band

Sony has a tolerance of up to 2 pixels out, which is huge! I only allow up to 1 in certain areas of the screen, what you see there is pretty damn good, i would guess a metre bac you cannot see it and certainly not from viewing distance also will depend on connection type as you may be seeing ringing.

Waza,

That is a good combo, Pearl/VP50.

Is there a marked difference in picture quality with using the VP50 rather than the scaler in the Pearl?

It is a combo which I may go with myself, is there a plus in scaling up the 1080i SKYHD to 1080P. I have HD going straight to a Toshiba 1080i set at the moment and have been waiting for the 70" SXRD rear pro, but might go with a Pearl instead.

Sorry for the slight OT, as Els said, looks like you have a slight 1/2 pixel out.

Nick

Re: Sony Pearl and Wierd Colour Band

Hello Nick,
Definatly for SD content, because there are more pixels, there are more visible gremlins on an SD picture.

Ive not really been able to see much of a difference with 1080i content though I havent really looked - I will test it out later.

Re: Sony Pearl and Wierd Colour Band

I also have some concerns regarding pixel alignment on my VPL-VW50.

I have just paid a lot of money for my dream machine and am not happy to have to "make do" with something that is not quite right just because Sony feel that it falls within their boundaries of what is acceptable.

Please have a look at the image attached and let me know if any of you think this is OK.

I got my machine from www.stoneaudio.co.uk. The guys there were really helpful, am I being unreasonable in requesting a replacement?

As you can see, the red drifts 1 pixel to the right and the blue 1 pixel to the left.

Yours appears to be a bit worse than mine, can you see the problem 1-2ft away from the screen?

Re: Sony Pearl and Wierd Colour Band

Yes you can, that's why I had a closer look. On closer inspection I think it might just be the red is misaligned by one pixel and because it is shifted over to the right it makes the pixels to the left look incorrect.

Would you try and get the retailer to swap the unit?

Re: Sony Pearl and Wierd Colour Band

Is this uniform across the whole screen, you really need to look at the entire image....whats it like in the centre?

Have you got a test pattern from a calibration disc you can try?

Re: Sony Pearl and Wierd Colour Band

The red pixel drift is uniform across the entire screen. I don't have a test pattern to run on it but the convergence problem is apparent with the HDMI, component or VGA connections.

I have spoken to the retailer, StoneAudio, and they have asked Sony for a response.

However, I don't want to hear, it is within Sony's level of 'tolerance'. I don't see why I should compromise on having a projector that is out of alignment when I can have one that isn't.

I'm sure Sony didn't design the Pearl to have this problem so why should it be deemed acceptable?

Also, I have just tried running my xbox360 through it with component cables at 1080p (new upgraded Xbox software) but the projector says "unsupported frequency" and doesn't display the picture.

Am I right in thinking that the Pearl will only display 1080p from a HDMI source and not component?

Re: Sony Pearl and Wierd Colour Band

As with most HD display devices, the Pearl can only accept 1080p over the digital HDMI connection.

Re: Sony Pearl and Wierd Colour Band

Make sure you get back to them before the cooling off period is up, if Sony haven't responded by then you might want to return it and order else where.

If they're willing to exchange it then you may be lucky with the next one.

Re: Sony Pearl and Wierd Colour Band

This is exactly the reasons I warned about importing these type devices, all 3 chip / tube devices suffer from this and need alignment. This is why a good dealers check and okaying stuff is so important. I have seen MUCH worse than this though.

I believe Sony et al just re align the panels.

Re: Sony Pearl and Wierd Colour Band

My retailer StoneAudio got in touch with Sony on my behalf. Sony has just phoned me and is arranging a replacement to be sent out direct to me.

Hopefully my second unit won't be suffering from the same problem.

Is there anybody else out there with a VPL-VW50 that could take a picture of the HDMI text (like the image I have posted on this thread) so that I can check that it's not a model-wide defect?
