What's a good DVD for auditioning DLP projectors ?

Going to Sevenoaks Soaund & Vision at Swiss Cottage on Saturday to look at projectors - Optoma HD72i and InFocus IN76.

What would be a good DVD to take with me to test them out with ? I've heard that Sin City is a good test ?

Re: What's a good DVD for auditioning DLP projectors ?

Sin City shows up rainbows like no other movie. The fact that it is mainly B&W means any rainbows jump out at you like a sore thumb.
But I believe actually trying to induce rainbows is the wrong thing to do. I used to see them but now I never do and that's because I do not look for them anymore and DLP's advantages over LCD far outweigh this possible problem in my opinion.
Take something like I Robot (great image) and just try to enjoy the picture overall instead of purposely inducing this quirk.
If you see them and cannot avoid seeing them then that's the way it is but anyone can see them if they try hard enough and you wouldn't sit at home shaking your head from side to side whilst watching a movie so why do it at a demo!

For me rainbows are a problem and IMO why live with the harsher image and the potential of rainbows when LCD is in most areas as good as DLP, and in some areas better than DLP now.

I agree DLP has advantages but unless you are viewing under optimal conditions most of them will be negated anyway.
Why risk inflicting rainbows on visiting friends or family when you just don't have to anymore.

I prefer my colours pre-mixed by the PJ rather than leaving it to my brain to do all the hard work.

If you can live with ' I wonder will this film be like for rainbows ' or not prone to them by all means go DLP but with LCD what you see is what you get.

Re: What's a good DVD for auditioning DLP projectors ?

its got to be fifth element superbit! scenes 5&6 have everything, dark scenes, flesh tones, landscapes and high dynamic scenes. Plus you can compare it to every other review on the web ;-)
Gladiator is another goodun and, as was mentioned, Sin City. Hi Def, BBC preview because everywhere has it. BTW, you do realise the optoma HD73 and mitsubishi 3100 are going to be released November, darkchip 3 makes a big difference and for about the same price.

Please tell me how LCD is as good as DLP in most areas and better in some? Better in one possibly. That being colour saturation. You read almost any DLP/LCD head to head and the DLP always comes out the winner. Better contrast, deeper blacks, smoother less 'digitized' images, less screendoor..In other words, closer to film.
Home Cinema Choice did a major DLP/LCD head to head and comments like "occasional screendoor" and "blacks still looked grey compared to the DLP models" spring to mind when they were describing the latest LCD models.
Yes I agree, some people are bothered by rainbows to the point of madness. But if you can live with rainbows (many can), then DLP does in most cases produce a better image than LCD.
Anyway, that's another debate entirely which has been argued a million times before on these forums but the fact remains that this poster is auditioning DLP models and not LCD ones, so he obviously believes DLP is the way to go.

Re: What's a good DVD for auditioning DLP projectors ?

Have to agree with the suggestion for the 5th Element.

Also Star Wars 3 and Irobot are pretty good.

If you want to see the grimey side of things as well Gladiator and Saving private ryan are a good choice

If you have a favourite movie, you know the one that you have watched more than you really should have take it as well as you will be able to pick up things that you are aware off due to the familarity you have.

I had my doubts about DLP as well, I was very susceptable to the rainbow effect but after a little while it is not an issue I just enjoy the big screen. In fact I watch more films now than ever before, just wish I had a totally blacked out room. But that will come with time.
