i sit about 12 feet from screen with projector at the height described.
The fixed angle offset of the HD70 means that the bottom edge of the projected image will appear 33% of the image height above the centerline of the lens.

Using a 92" diagonal image size as an example (HD70 would have to be between 10.5 feet and 12.7 from the screen), would result in an image height of 45", so the bottom edge of the image would be about 15" above the centre of the lens. The centre of your lens would be roughly 50"from the floor, so the bottom of your image would be about 65" from the floor (5.4 feet).

If this is too high you could adjust the height of the shelf or the angle of the shelf or pj and give the keystone a few clicks, one of my customers has done this and said image quality was not really affected.

Hope that helps.

Re: The Optoma HD70 owners club thread...

those blacks look very good to me, looks like this PJ could turn out to be a winner

Only problem i have now is a brand spanking new Da-lite 92"diag Electric screen that is way to big for me as i have limited projection distance So looks like i will have to get rid and get a smaller screen !!

So working on that basis if I were to ceiling mount the HD70 say 12" from the top of the ceiling and had a image height of 45" the top of the image would be about 27" from the top of the ceiling.(12" + 15"). Sorry for asking I'm just trying to get my head round all the things that need to be considered before I choose a pj.

Paul,

That is correct, assuming the centre of the lens is 12" from the ceiling. You would be able to adjust the 27" by using any tilt/height adjustment your ceiling mount may have and giving the keystone a click or two.

If you have any more questions please feel free to ask.

Re: The Optoma HD70 owners club thread...

I'm gonna buy a HD70 too with a projection screen to boot (probably Beamax R-black series). I have a pretty large living room and can sit about 4m to 6m away from the screen. The projector would be mounted at about 4m to 6m too.

What size of screen would you recommend then? I now sit about 5m away from my 42" plasma which is just fine, but I want a very big screen for that cinema feeling, I just don't want it to be TOO big as to get uncomfortable.

All advice appreciated!

ps: will HDMI+component cables do? or would I be better of fixing a VGA cable too? (need to plaster these into the ceiling).

Size of screen is down to personal taste really, the smallest image you would get mounting the HD70 at 4 metres is 95", at 6 metres it is a whopping 142".

There is a useful Projection calculator here.

Mounting at 4 metres would give you a diagonal range of 95-114".

HDMi or Component will do just fine, you only need to route the cables you will need, which depends how many sources you intend to run through it, if for example you are using an AV receiver then you will only need the one cable from that.

Hope that helps.

To upscale standars DVD`s on a budget, the general consensus on these forums would probably suggest a Sony DVP-NS76H- around 70-80 pounds. Probably worth the extra to go with a 800 pound projector.

I only have a component video imput and a DVD player (Panasonic S27) without upscaling techniek. Will I still have the nice effect the HD70 creates?

I do plan on buying myself the HD-A1 in the new year.

Re: The Optoma HD70 owners club thread...

So, I am looking at the HD70 myself and would really like to hear what all of you think now.

Having heard lots of praise for price/performance, I have also heard lots of critics claim the colors are off and cannot be fixed properly.

So, please all the happy bunnys raise their hands and all the unhappy ones explain themselves :D

A german calibrator has got 2500:1 calibrated at D65

Mod Comment > cyberheater I've had to break the links to the images you posted as it's against forum policy with regards bandwidth theft. Thanks

Re: The Optoma HD70 owners club thread...

swigsy, can you tell me what setup you have for collors and brightness?

Because I've seen pictures earlier from people posting and there was way to much green and blue in the picture. I'dd rather have as realistic possible collors and fleshtones.

Re: The Optoma HD70 owners club thread...

Just got a HD70 for my mate and had a play at home brfore installing.

I AM AMAZED!!!!

The vivid nature of the colours, with only a rudimentary setup is unbelievable for so little money. And I am now a firm convert to higher lumen outputs if at all possible as the image in a lit room is still very watchable, far more so than my H78

Maybe the 'pop' is achived at the expense of colour accuracy to some degree. But I was expecting a lot worse image, and would heartily recommend the 70 for 'living room' applications, and particularly with HD material.

Is it perfect? No, of course not. But I wish MY first projector had looked anything like this- and it cost me over twice as much...

Re: The Optoma HD70 owners club thread...

seems like there is an affaul thread about the callibration settings at AVS. I hope this will not happen on this forum. Because there it grew out into another battle of bashing and praising the HD70.

Many people say the collors of the HD70 are incorrect outside the box and need callibration. I'm perfectly fine with that and even think it's an interesting proces. I do think the collors of the HD70 can be set right. and swigsy, yours are among the best pics of the HD70 I've seen so far with pretty correct collors. I know pictures aren't that accurate because of the picture camera, the quality of my PC monitor et cetera.. But, I've seen many pictures where blue or green dominates the picture and everything looks mustard yellow.

Unfortionatly when I'll receive my HD70 I won't be using avia and the THX optimizer will do more wrong than good I'm afraid. so trying out some of the people's callibration setting may be of some help. and tweaking it for yourself later untill you're happy with it.

look forward to see your settings

cheers

All of my settings are done by eye only, i dont use an optimizer and prefer to set the image to what i like. Its like all things, everyone has got a preference and each persons will be different. One of those subjects that we will all have to agree to disagree on

that's an interesting perspective, swigsy.

But can you give your callibration setup anyway. It could be a nice reference point to start at.

Re: The Optoma HD70 owners club thread...

and also, there are some really nice shots of the panny AX100 posted by Gandley in the "Panasonic AX100 impressions and screenshots" thread. Those are what I call perfect collors and fleshtones. he also showed a comparison between the H79 and the AX100 outside the box. For me the difference is day and night. But I bet the HD70 can get the same result with some tweaking as the the AX100. but I think that optoma can do something about there settings next time they bring a new PJ on the market because most of there projectors need quit some callibration because some collors are pushed to far.

Can someone try to get their setting the same so the HD70's collors look the same as the AX100 in that one picture of gandalf? I know it's absurd, but I think those just look correct.

Cheers
It's about calibrating the gray scale of the projector to meet the D65 video standard. Film studios have agreed to a standard to calibrate their studio lighting and cameras. This standard is D65 and it is based on the colour temperature of natural daylight which is around 6500k (kelvin).

A properly calibrated display should exactly match the gamma / grayscale and colours that the film producer intended.

How did you calibrate, what method did you use to come up with the numbers?
