HDMI advice for 1080 PJ

Hi Guys

I'm planning to install a new PJ and would appreciate feedback based on any practical experience of longish(12-15m) HDMI runs with a 1080p source. Also are there any future implication with the introduction of HDMI 1.3 that I should consider.

Thanks.

AVI

PS Also posted in the cable thread but I figured this would be an area many PJ users face hence postibng here.

Re: HDMI advice for 1080 PJ

Poor HDMI cables seem to struggle with high bitrates over long distances, and I think 1080p over 12-15m qualifies for that. If you get a good one, you will probably be OK, but I doubt anyone will guarantee that. You could use an HDMI amplifier/equaliser - CRTProjectors and others sell them.

Good luck, Nick

Re: HDMI advice for 1080 PJ

There are several other options you need to think about as well. Do you use a good quality cable on it's own a la Bettercables. Do you use a repeater box / and or switch box?, if so make sure they are also HDMI 1.x aware (I suspect you will be dealing with HDMI 1.1). The other option on the cables is an optical one they are really nice but need some power from the driving end and not all kit supplies this. They do have te advantage of being thin and lite but most are DVI based. Also some cables are to be compatibility tested in HDMI 1.3 especially at 1080p and long lengths, which has never happened before in HDMI. As the bandwith in HDMI 1.3 has almost doubles, then the quality of cable has had to 'increase' as well to meet the full HDMI 1.3 specs, very few will meet this however currently.
