Assistance Req

Hi everyone, new to the board, been reading up on projectors as i'm getting one (all being possible size wise etc) for my room.

Roy Jowetts is about 20 miles from me so i'm going to look at projectors and screens etc tommorrow.

I'm getting a screen mainly to play playstation 3 games on (when its finally out) and also watch the football etc through (only got digital cable, not sky+ so the projector needs a scart socket and hdmi for playstation 3)

From posts and feedback i think my 1st choice is going to be the current offer on their website:

http://www.royjowetthomecinema.co.uk...2164b98bf86b43

Panasonic PTAE900 Projector with 3 year warranty and a Panoview/Optoma 92" Graywolf II screen for £999.99, seems to get very good reviews on the whole on here and on Home cinema choice.

My room is just short of 12ft wide by 14ft long, i'm thinking of having the screen over the window bay (i have blackout curtains) problem is i have a light fitting approx 40" away from the window bay (the bulb casings come 8" down) will this be a problem for the ceiling mounted projector?

My room height is 8ft (96"). Sorry i'm not being all that clear but i can't think of a better way of wording my questions.

Any comments, suggestions greatly appreciated.

Re: Assistance Req

i have same problem with my tv in its current place.....

putting a screen up so it comes down infront of the tv isnt the problem.

problem is the light is a ceiling fan/light..... so no way to ceiling mount the PJ

only way i can do it is move room around and put tv on different wall.

u could " if only a light batten fitting" ... replace it with a downlighter ?

i also spotted that PJ and screen package via doing a google search...
seems a good deal...

Re: Assistance Req

Very good choice of PJ for your needs so no probs there. The Graywolf Screen will allow you to watch the pj with ambient light in the room or on overcast days which is very handy.
With regards to positioning the PJ, you could always wall mount the screen slightly lower down the wall so the angled PJ misses the light fitting. The Graywolf has a large black area at the top anyway so your image would not start for about 1" down even if the screen was mounted on the ceiling. This is not ideal as you will need to use keystone adjustment to get a square image if you angle the PJ too much, and keystone can have a detrimental effect on your image quality.
The other thing you can do is to place the PJ on either a rear shelf (as I have mine) or buy one of those TV brackets from Argos and place it on that on a rear wall.
I have attached an image of my PJ mounted on a rear shelf. It is very discrete and can be easily moved if I want to.

Re: Assistance Req

had a look at the Panasonic PTAE900 projector today, must say i'm very impressed and will be buying one before the weekend.

i also need to buy a dvd/surround sound system to go with it now, i'm not after the best sound as its going into a bedroom in a family house so the times i'll be able to crank it up whilst playing games or watching a movie will be limited.

i've been told that i'm best off using the dvd player to connect everything to (ntl cable, playstation 2 etc) then connect that to the projector via scart.

is this right? if so what does everyone recommend as a decent budget system?

thanks.

Re: Assistance Req

I don't know your budget, but this system by Panasonic should do the trick. It is available at Richer Sounds for £349.95 (see: http://www.richersounds.co.uk/showpr...d=PANA-SCHT880 ) which includes the DVD player, speakers, subwoofer and a 1000 watt RMS digital amplifier. your best bet then would be a scart switching box ( try Currys who sell some nice ones with remote control for £50) and all your scart enabled equipment goes into the box and one scart goes to the PJ. You then use the remote to select which piece of equipment you wish to view. You may find you get a better DVD image running component out to the PJ but try the scart first and see what you think.
So for £400 you'll have all you need to get up and running.

Re: Assistance Req

thanks for that, looks nice, couple of other quick questions:

if i get that dvd player and surround sound as you said above, i will connect the playstation 2 and ntl box through the dvd player to the projector which is fine.

what happens when the playstation 3 comes out and i want to connect it to the projector? where will my sound come from? am i right in saying the dvd player above will not accept this cable?

in other words where would my sound come from on my ps3?

thanks again your being a real help!

Re: Assistance Req

That dvd player wont accept the PS3's HDMI cable but the PS3 should have an optical out (sound) which should go to the 'optical in' on the dvd player, HDMI straight to the projector.
Check how many inputs that dvd player has as your already planning on using 2.

Re: Assistance Req

thanks, makes sense now. yes the ps3 has an optical out so i will be fine. thanks for your advice.

when the ps3 is out my ps2 will be redundant, so the only things i will have are:

ps3 - hdmi straight to projector, optical out to dvd surround system
ntl cable - scart to dvd
dvd - scart to projector

is this right?

thanks again

Yep, that'll work. Though you might get a better DVD pic from component from the DVD to the PJ or hdmi (if the DVD player has it).

Re: Assistance Req

Yeh i think that DVD player from Richer Sounds has component output which will be better than scart.

Re: Assistance Req

i've now been told what i'm planning will not work. Can someone please clear this up for me?

i'm buying a PTAE900 with 92" screen
i want to connect it via an amp or dvd home cinema package to my playstation 2 (scart or the red, white&yellow what are they called rca's?), ntl cable box (scart and audio outs) and when released a playstation 3 (hmdi) which when released i will make the playstation 2 redundant.

I need an amp with speakers or a home cinema package to give me sound for all these. I'm not after amazing sound quality as this setup is going into a bedroom and will not be cranked up very often.

To be honest i'm on a bit of a budget now to get the audio sorted out.

please help!!

Why will this recommendation not work? I did say to use a scart switching box which with the system will work just fine. The DVD player does not have a scart 'in' and a scart 'out' like on a VCR or DVD recorder, but with the scart switching box, it will just be a matter of selecting the input you wish to use. The scart to the PJ will come from the switching box, not the DVD player, all scart enabled equipment will go into the scart switching box and one scart out to the PJ. The HDMI will go directly from the PS3 to the PJ and all sound will go into the amp section of the Panasonic AV system ( you may need a switching box for this too but they are very cheap and many are on the same scart switching box so shop around.
