sub £500 bedroom projector.

been out the projector market for a while now but since looking at the price for a lcd tv for my bedroom thought I'd be better off with a value projector.

As its in the bedroom it does not need to have a fantastic price tag so what are your recommendations on projectors around £400-£500?

Also looking for a pull down screen that can be celiing mounted.

Hi there

I'm seriously considering the Optoma dv10 Movietime myself. It's not HD ready (only compatible) but should be great for DVD's or standard definition tv. And as a bonus it has a DVD player built in, plus speakers. Or you could feed the sound out through the optical output into an external sound system.

I think for proper cinema rooms there may be 'better' choices but this is ideal for a smaller room as it can throw a big picture from very close to the screen, and with having most things built in there will be less cables etc and will take up less space.

Things to be aware of are that it is a DLP and so you need to check whether you are susceptible to the rainbow effect, and it has no horizontal or vertical lens shift and isn't ceiling mountable, so it basically has to sit on a low table or the floor in front of your screen. I guess this is probably OK for you though as it's for your bedroom. Good idea to demo it as far as the possibility of rainbows goes however. I've never seen one running myself but hope to demo one soon.

It costs about £600 from various places - PC World and Roy Jowett spring to mind. Not bad with having built in DVD and speakers.

Last time I was in a PC World (Nottingham in this case) they had a DV10 running, amongst the tellies. It was in its own little demo booth, so screen was only 40 inches or so, but was good enough to get the idea. It's a neat little beast.

You could look at the MT200 which currently going very cheap at certain outlets (look at a couple of the other threads), however I do think you would be better off with a normal TV; projectors are not really suitable for replacing a standard TV.
