Benq 5120 using DVI

I have just picked up my 1st projector and to say i'm impressed is an understatement.

Using the component input the picture is great. I am trying the DVI input with a borrowed £30, 5 meter DVI-DVI cable from my dvd player. There is a big improvement over component with just one problem. On white sky and other bright whites there is a lot of grain and noise. In every other respect the pictures perfect.

Has anyone got or had the 5120, or any other projector, who have used DVI and can advise as to whether it is normal. Could it be the cable?

Any thoughts on this greatly appreciated.

I used to run the 5120 over DVI. For the price it gave qreat PQ

First question, have you tried any form of calibration ? You need to at least get your brightness and contrast levels set properly. if you dont have a setup disk like DVE/AVIA then the THX optimiser on the Star Wars disks will get you most of the way. The levels on the component input will be different so you my not have noticed it before

Even given the above I still saw some noise on whites - typically cloudy skies/white shirts - with the 5120. I believe its one of the downsides of using a budget DLP PJ. I was able to minimise it with calibration but never completely removed it.

I haven't calibrated it, so i will run the THX optimiser.

I will be able to live with it knowing that it's not a fault in my system.

Thanks for that sniffer66
