Whats best 720P 3 chip or 1080 single?

Got Sky HD today and am junking my 1024 pj. Really interested to know what you think is best, is it to go for the highest native resolution 1920x1080 and single chip, say the ProjectionDesign Action Model 3 1080 or something like the Sim2 CX3??? My gut says go with the highest resolution??????

I am in exactly the same position and I think the best thing is to go for 1080p. With hd dvd and br around the corner and with stunning picture quality i wouldn't really want the projector to downconvert. And anyway in 2-3 years 720p projectors would be old news probably.

I am looking into the new sim2 1080p, optoma 1080p and the projection design one. Any other ones?

I had both the Sim 1080P single chipper and 720P 3 chipper demoed to me at the recent Cedia show on london. The video source was a hd-DVD showing Apollow 13 onto a high quality screen and we were sitting fairly close.

The 3 chipper blew the 1080p image away. The colours were fantastic and beautifully saturated.

Even at the short distance we were viewing at, you could not tell the peceived increase in resolution afforded by the 1080p device.

The 3 chipper won easily.

After having seen few days ago -Crystallio II scaler + Projection Design Model III DLP1080- and - Crystallio II scaler + infocus 777-

I feel like 1080 for screens up to 120'' does not give ,the much anticipated from all improvment in picture quality.

Actually the picture of 777 was better, more solid, and easier
for the eyes .I agree with cyber all the way

I am planning on getting my ultimate projector (that I can afford) early next year - to take advantage of hd-dvd/bluray.

So if I have £3000 to spend on a projector (which to me is a very large amount to spend) - would I actually then get a better picture from a £3000 LCD/DLP 720 projector, rather than the cheapest probably £3000 1080 lcd projector?

The comments by the above posters were very interesting as I assumed that the best picture would be the higher resolution one.

Alistair,

I think for 3000 you should really get a very good 720p dlp projector. Don't forget also to consider spending money on a good screen as it really affects the image.

You will probably be able to buy the new panasonic 1080p lcd porjector at that price but I beleive dlp technology very "generally" give a much better picture and longer lamp life.

The cheapest probably 1080p dlp one will be the optoma hd81 but i estimate it between 5k-6k although not really sure.

I had a talk with the sim2 importer here in Cyprus and we will try to do a comparison between the c3x and the ht3000 to test the differences between 3 chip 720p and single chip 1080p. We have to wait though for the ht3000 to be released. He is also the importer of Infocus so we might compare a 777 or 333 also if available.

I also have the feeling that the 3 chippers 720p would be better but "1080p" and native res for hd-dvd and bluray also excites me very much. Have to see....

What about the new Ruby which is supposed to come out in autumn?

spylab,

please expand a bit more on what you saw. it is really interesting because i think the 777 costs around 10k while the other one around 30k...
