Infocus 5700 noise levels

I've recently purchased a 5700 from these forums to replace a PJ-TX100. I must say I think the PQ is great and far more natural than that of the TX100 however I have a problem - it's too noisy. I can live with it but my wife doesn't like it and as we have to watch films at low volume levels due to young children sleeping in the room above it can get annoying.

Is there anything that can be done to reduce the noise or is it just going to be noisy compared with the 'whisper quiet' TX100? If it is, I'm gutted because my wife has just caved in and let me buy a new plasma so I dont want to upset her with the 5700 noise and will have to sell it on.

Hi
Are you running at full power? If you turn the lamp save mode on it cuts the light output down(i hardly notice as its a bright pj to start with) and runs with less noise.Mine also gets better after 20 mins playing.

Hi,

Many thanks for the reply. I find there is only a little difference in noise level between high and low settings, but do run on it low as you are correct the picture is easily bright enough. I agree with you that it does get a bit quieter after 20 mins or so but it is still noisy in comparison to the TX100. I wonder if anyone else has compared noise levels between the 5700 and other quiet LCD's such as the Z4 etc?

The 5700 and 7200/05 was renouned for being noisy. I've demoed one myself and it was quite noticeable. I have a Z4 now, and whilst 'whisper quiet' is a bit of a lie, it is unobtrusive a foot away from my head on low lamp. You can hear it if you listen though and I have read of some people here being bugged by it. It's nowhere near the levels of the Infocus.

The cheap child-friendly solution is 2 pairs of headphones with a headphone splitter, though you'll lose surround sound! Otherwise, try and sit further away from it.

I vaguely recall some Infocus units being louder than others, since they can suffer from fan whine.

I have the infocus and agree it's a bit noisy. the optoma H79 is supposedly a whole lot quieter. I have read on avsforum of some people putting soundproof boxes around their PJ, and this might work, but I would worry a bit about ventilation efficiency.
Just see if you can get used to it. It's definitely worth it for the filmic presentation in comparison to LCD

Many thanks for the additional replies - headphones may be an option but I'm not sure my wife will go for it and I did think about a 'hush box' but it seems like a lot of effort and may reduce the lamp life etc if the box doesn't keep the temperatures down.

I watched a movie during the day yesterday on it whilst the kids were at school and my wife was out, turned up the 5.1 and it was fantastic. Its going to be a real shame if I have to sell it on.
