My New IN76 ...Good til it broke !!!

Took delivery of my new shiney IN76 today from Comet - great delivery at 9am on a Sunday morning

Set it up this pm and very impressed with

Colours look very dense / saturated
Very bright, even in my Lounge at 2pm with alot of light leakage
Good build quality on first impressions

So.... will I be demo'ing it tonight in the dark with some DVD's ??.............well, no I wont.

After 15mins viewing over component and a few menu adjustments, the PJ has now decided to Lock up. That is, it starts, shows the Infocus splash screen and then..er....nothing.

The only way to turn it off is at the power (which does not let the fan run on so I am reluctant to power the unit on again)

The remote or PJ buttons do nothing, cant even power down from the power button on the PJ.

Not a good start .....Comet will be getting a call tomorrow - bet they try to get me to have it repaired under warranty (that aint gonna happen !!)

pretty miffed though, good job I havent sold the 4805 yet.

Tried a fresh re-power after 1 hour but same again.

Not going to try again as the PJ must be powered off at the mains so the Fan does not run on as it should.

I checked the Infocus web site and lo and behold, the latest firmware update says :-

Play Big IN76 Firmware Revision History

Version
Date
Notes/Enhancements

v2.3 14-April-2006 Improvements to video syncing table
HDMI video codes corrected (1-34)
Fixed interlaced computer sources image shift.
Fixed no image issue after 4 hour sleep mode was initialized.
Added M1 and HDMI in HDMI DDC option.
Fixed lockup issues when disabling all "source enables" except for one, then power cycling unit.
Corrected hue shift in the black levels for component video inputs.
Removed fan speed increase during power down.
Fixed vertical position jump, when aspect ratio is set to crop top and bottom of the image.

v2.1 N/A
Initial release

note the 'Fixed lockup issues....'

It am guessing I have v2.1 and when I selected component input as the only input, it triggered this lockup bug. Typical engineer, within 15 mins of owning a new piece of kit, I have found the bug that renders it useless.

and before anyone goes there..I dont want to try downloading the latest firmware as if that is not the problem, I am sure it will put my return at risk !!

if i was you id be trying it all night long! try pressing diffrent buttons while its coming on etc. i mean, why worry bout the bulb?! if its broken then comet have to replace it, they cant say you have to get it repaired (thats bull**** if they do). if they do tell them you didnt buy a repaired unit, if i did i would have paid less, now turn your arse around, walk to your storeroom and get me a NEW replacement!

lucky you didnt go pc world, i got a pj from them once, when i bought it home it had 20 odd dead pixels. so i took it back and they said they have to try it b4 i could return it. so the guy trys it on a bright blue desktop background image with the pj projecting a 14inch image on the wall. he then tells me its fine and nothings wrong with it. pr*ck! i started on at him so much that he ended up letting me try it with half the store lights off in the back area of the store, low and behold, there was the dead pixels. i called him a few names under the sun as b4 he was tlking to me as if i was scum and knew nothing.

hope comet are better than pc world! gd luck skywalker!

Comet usually aren't bad that way,if it's within a month i think you can have your money back or a replacement, the only thing they might say is they want an engineer (lol) to check it first so it can be returned but you could that in the shop, it's a petty shops don't automatically update firmware before they sell you them, either way bad luck but it'll get sorted.

P.S My comet don't sell pj's

Man, that sucks, I feel for you. I'm sure you'll replace it no problem, but still, the last thing you want when you've just bought a new toy like this, and are all excited, is for it to break the very first day!

Cheers guys

youre right, a bit deflated now

By the time I get a replacement, thats another 4 or 5 games passed.

It was comet online by the way, 1489 is a good price, but I would have liked one that worked..

And now the buggy firmware is fixed and updated to V2.3 which doesnt have the bug.

It is very nice

Biggest improvement over the 4805 is the brightness

Whites look solid and colours really dense.

HD material also looks impressive from PC over VGA, will try HDMI later.

On the downside, the HD resolution makes SD material on SKY look a bit blocky and edge noise on some objects, especially if the sharpness is turned up. I think it is prob just the resolution as movement is fine so processing seems good.
