help with a toshiba TLP-ET1

this is my first projector and i cant get it to stay on.
all it does is power on, displays a picture for a few seconds and then the fan comes on full speed and the unit goes into stand by mode.
ive tried this loads of times now and all with the same result.
ive tried VGA and svideo and neither seem to work.
is there anything im missing or not doing?

and to add to this, there is a pic of a red fan that comes up in the top left corner before it turns off, so am i right in thinking its over heating? ive checked the fans and theyre working ok and theres nothing in the way of the grilles

are there filters on the fan and if so check to see if they are blocked

filters are fine, nothing blocking them at all

on the top of the unit, the fan light is out all the time (not lit), when i start the thing up the 3 other lights come one then when the screen goes blank the 2 end led's go to red and the fan is really loud then it turns off
its serisouly doing my head, ive not got the instructions either so im really stuck
