CRT was for as long as you could remember, the king of projectors with regards to image quality. It produced stunning blacks and incredible contrast with smooth film-like images although CRT projectors were never that bright. CRT projectors do have a downside though, they are huge machines that need professional installation and once installed, cannot be moved without painstaking re-installation. The three colour tubes need to be aligned exactly to produce a clear sharp image.
DLP on the other hand is a digital, portable system that uses a chip that contains microscopic mirrors that pivot so they can either reflect light or turn it off. This light passes through a colour wheel which spins very quickly producing the full spectrum of colours.
Originally, DLP was far, far behind the quality of CRT and produced blacks which were, at best, dark grey and had very low contrast ratios.
Today however, DLP is fast approaching the quality of CRT but without the headache of a fixed professional installation that CRT demands.
A DLP or for that matter, an LCD projector can be set up and running in a matter of minutes and the latest models produce stunning High Def images for not much more than £1000.
CRT is a dying technology in my opinion and is unsuitable for most people's requirements in today's AV home. DLP and LCD are where most get their Home Cinema pleasures from so go audition one today!

CRT or DLP

Well personal preference is DLP due to picture quality, brighness, contrast and from the LCD Based pj's I saw they were sorry to say pretty poor

If you are looking sub 2k themescene do one (7 oaks sound and vision) it is about £1700

and they did demo another one which was better and it was £1500 sorry cannot remember what make it was poss a runco

but both were good images and even dark scenes were good
regards

sean

Ahhh...Now that is a different matter!
Basically,
DLP=Uses Mirrors, High Contrast, Good Blacks, low pixelation, visible 'rainbows' to some viewers

LCD=Uses an LCD Panel, usually lower black levels, higher pixelation, sharper images, good colours, possible verticle banding (VB) problem on some models.

This is a great generalisation and today, the gap between the two technologies is very close indeed. LCD can now produce fantastic blacks, great contrast and low pixelation and DLP can now be bought in 3 chip designs which completely removes any chance of rainbows. I would not like to say one is better than the other any more and you really need to audition a few of each to see which you prefer. Let me know your budget and I'll recommend a few models as I am sure many others will too!

A 16.9 pulldown widescreen starts from about £80 upwards. I'd spend about £100 for my first one. Take a look at this Infocus one for £99 See: http://www.hifibitz.co.uk/product.asp?id=4615

Or this Beamax one for £114.99 See: http://www.hifibitz.co.uk/product.asp?id=3187

The one I have is a high contrast grey screen which is £85 (+vat) but has a limited viewing angle which could be a problem for you. If you sit bang center in the middle of the image it is fine, but move to the sides and the brightness drops. If you can accomodate the high contrast grey screen, the reward is much increased blacks and improved contrast. See: http://shop.nexnix.co.uk/Greywolf_Pr...n_Screens.html
