Quick xbox 360 projection question

Something on another thread just got me thinking...

should setting the xbox to 720p and it being downscaled via a non-HD projector (the sharp z200 for example) result in a more detailed picture than setting it to the pal native 576p?

Some games e.g. Call of Duty 2 look better by setting 720p, even if your PJ is lower res (I saw this with my AE100) - this suggests the game actually changes its rendered resolution, rather than just scaling from a fixed resolution to your Xbox360 configured resolution. PGR3 on the other hand didn't look any different though.
