Is the HS50 HI DEF?

Hello everyone just joineed the site, excellent source of info!!!!

Bought a Sony hs50 in October of last year assuming it was hi def ready. Now i know resolution wise it is but apparently its not hdcp compatable. So does this mean that i can watch hi def trailers via computer but i cant watch hi def movies and sports on sky etc...?
If so what is the point? I bought it knowing i would be ready for the launch of hi def sky and now hearing that coz its not hdcp compliant i might not be able to watch it!!
could someone firstly explain what hdcp compliant is? and secondly: if i am right will i be able to get my money back as i feel misled by the bloke who sold me it from 'Roy Jowett'
Also why is the HS60 got HD READY all over it but the HS50 says no such thing?

Thanx Ste!

It should be HDCP compliant. IIRC it's got HDMI which has HDCP compliance as part of the spec.

HDCP is a copyright control where both devices have to do a handshake before a digital signal will be sent. It is there to prevent sending the digital signal to a recording device in order to prevent piracy.

I think because it has HDMI its taken for granted that its is HDCP compliant. Here's a link to the US press release where they say it supports HDCP.

But here's a link to the german cine4home review, where in section 1.2, para 2 they mention it is HDCP compliant (thorough as they are!). Here's a translation:

Quote:
A YUV component input (3x cinch), an RGB H/V input (sub-D) and a digital HDMI input with HDCP copy protection support as well as for customary picture signals a Composite (cinch) and an S-Video input....
