If you buy an item 2nd-hand from outside the EU with a high value, e.g. projector or amplifier / processor or the like, would you still have to pay import duty on it? Surely if it's 2nd hand, it's like sending someone a 'present'.
I thought import duty only applied to proper 'buying' of new equipment from a retailer?

I mean after all, I don't get charged import duty on my camera every time I fly back into the country? What happened if I left it abroad and a friend sent it back? Would I have to pay import duty on it then?

If this is not the case, what is the likely cost of import duty, percentage wise?

I've bought high value (second hand) stuff from the US on ebay and never been charged import duties. But the box used was just a plain unmarked one with no company logo's etc...
