newbie question- pic quality issues

apologies if this has been asked and answered before but new to this forum and have just set up my first home cinema but am unhappy with the results.

I have a Samsung DVD-HD950 connected to a HP- vp6321 projector via a 5m hdmi to dvi cable.

I have noticed an issue with the video quality which I can only describe as a colur pixelation problem.
Specifically there are significant blocks of colour that are obviously out of place for instance on someone's face where the hairline meets the face there will be a dark green area on the face, or in a black area of the screen I can see patches of purple. I'm not sure what the correct term for this problem is.

The problem is not so bad that you can't enjoy the film but now I have noticed it I can't help but look for it.

Hey, see my thread entitled "damage caused by bump to PJ", I'm currenlty fighting the same/similar issue. I think I replied over on the other forum, did you get any suggestions over there yet?

The patches you mention could be mpg blocking perhaps, or maybe if the brightness and contrast are incorretly set they may be highlighting artefacts that would normally be hidden. Do you have a THX DVD with Optimode? Use that to set the white and black levels (brightness does black, contrast does white) and see if that makes any difference. See the basic calibration sticky at the top of the page for more info.
