New lamp or new PJ?

Hi all,
I have a Phillips Proscreen 4750. I've had it for about 5 years and it's still running, but I would think that the lamp would be going soon. I recently checked the lamp timer, and it says I have 7444 hours left, so I'm sure that is unreliable.
I was looking at replacement bulbs, and they're very expensive. It makes me wonder if I should purchase a new PJ instead. Has the technology gotten much better, or should I just get a new lamp?

If I got a new PJ, would the old one have much resale value with the lamp burned out?

If I get the new lamp, can you recommend replacing it yourself or taking it somewhere to get it done? I'm comfortable with taking apart computers and such, but the idea that a partial fingerprint can make the bulb die quickly is a little frightening.

Thanks,

use cotten gloves , you can still get them, do a search on google or even use marigolds, sounds daft but they are sometimes the best ideas

How much exactly is a new lamp? I recently asked the similar question regarding my projector, and got very mixed replies. Now I've just laid hands on a new lamp, bought cheap at eBay (if only the seller would be so kind to actually contact me...) and will simply keep using it for a couple of years longer.

Search around for cheap offers to the lamp is one thing you should definately do!

5yrs is a long time in PJ world. Go and get a demo of one of the recent crop of PJs. I think you will feel it worthwhile to invest in a newer model.

I've just replaced a 4 year old projector with a new BenQ PE7700 and the difference is enormous. For me the question of whether to buy a new bulb for the old one or a new projector at 4 times the price of a bulb was easy.

I've never seen your projector but you don't hear much about Philips projectors in these parts. If you went and viewed a new projector I suspect you'd be amazed at the improvement.

And, sadly, depressed at how little your projector is worth second hand.

That's because lamp prices vary quite a lot from model to model. Some lamps can be had for £100+, whereas you won't get much change from £300 for others.

If I had an old pj, I'd sell it on Ebay (in working order), and buy a new one.
