Projector or scaler?

I like to buy something for my home cinema set up each xmas. Last year it was a Denon 3805 and a Denon 3910. This year I can't make my mind up, should I buy a new projector for say £1500 such as the Epson TW600 etc. or a scaler such as the Lumagen HDP which is on special offer at the moment. My current projector is a Sony VPL-W10HT which I have owned for 6 years, it has only done 587hrs. Would one of these new low cost projectors out perform my Sony with a scaler?

Thanks for your views.

Dave

Hi Dave
About a month ago i purchased the Lumagen HDP to use with my Panasonic AE700, and i have to say the results blew my socks off! However though at the same time the HDP has really highlight the faults of the 700 to me which is forcing me to upgrade as soon as i can, and as your PJ is even older than mine, then i would guess that the same thing would happen to you only to a greater level.

In short i would spend your money on a new PJ this year which is future proof and allow you to fully use all the HDP functions and get the scaler next year, esp as a new model is coming out from Lumagen next year with the latest processor that will either make the HDP obsolete or at the very least lower its price.

The only over thing i would say is that considering how little you use your PJ, the lumagen seems a lot of money to spend for the few times you will use it, esp as you will prob spend 40 - 50 hours just tweaking it, nearly a years worth of viewing time!
