Hitachi TX100 tweakers thread.

I've ordered my CC40R filter that should arrive tomorrow if the snow doesn't snarl up delivery.

I'll be connected via component from my Limit 900 DVD player running in progressive scan mode.

It seems that the best approach is to use default gamma curve No. 1 and use dynamic colour tempature.

These need to be tweaked to use the CC40R. Does anyone have any suitable settings?

i can only post my settings when i have it powered up

i will check back later but off hand i think its a custom gamma 2, colour temp at 8500k and iris on natural (4) gives me a decent image with what may sound like weird settings and for my eyes i get a alot more contrast than any other settings ive tried and thats alot. this is for movie watching i have different settings for gaming, windows etc. im using a HTPC via Dvi so maybe my settings will be terrible via your component connection method but i will post them for you to try later

Thanks Kopite4Ever

From a lot of reviews i've read they state the best gamma curve is gamma curve 1 default.
Also, for maximum CR you need to set it to dynamic and use a lens filter to regain the correct colour balance.

One last thing. Apparently, the lens shift system when used near the extremes of it's range really reduces the light output out of the lens and therefore reduces maximum CR levels.

you will have to let us know how you get on with the filter.

i tried the dynamic & default gamma 1 settings and i didnt like the picture it gave off, it was slightly dull looking. not in brightness terms just the feel of the image.

im sure people wouldnt like to view the settings i use, each to their own i guess

well after watching some stuff high def CSI and lost i went about tweaking again on my unused saved settings.

started off with what most use dynamic on the colours and gamma one curve, with the odd tweak on the brightness. i had the iris at natural (4) and to my amazement it gave a near identical image to the settings i posted above. the settings i posted above IMO give slightly richer colours especially blues, but the new settings were not bad at all.

all in all i think i will still keep using my one's posted above as i like the richer colours on the image but for quick and easy first time hitachi tweak dynamic & gamma one is a nice combo.

if anyone uses said settings above let me know how you get on with them with your thoughts on why its bad/good etc

there are loads of tweak threads and talks on Panny's and sanyo's, the hitachi dosnt seem to get the recognition on this forum it deserves IMO

regards

I've been on business travel and being beaten up on the subwoofer forum for something I didn't do hence I've been a bit sidetracked.

Good to be back among friends however, I'll post some settings when I get a chance. I have two settings I use, the first pops your eyes out and sticks two fingers up to contrast, the 2nd is when I'm feeling "all cinematic". I've also got the defaults stored in memory 1 to remind me how bobbins the pic was for the first month I watched it.

Here are my settings. No warranties expressed or implied...

Memory 1 - Default (useful to know where you've come from)

Brightness: +3
Contrast: 0
Gamma: Default 1
Colour Temp: 8000K
Sharpness: 0 (at a guess - it's set to 4 on mine which I may have inadvertantly done before saving)
Iris: 4

How does it look? A bit too dark, too little shadow detail, and colour too saturated for my liking, that said all the projectors I saw on demo all looked similar and people seem to like this kind of pic.

Memory 2 - "Big Telly"

Brightness: +6
Contrast: +2
Gamma: Custom Default 1, +14, +14, +13, +12, +12, +7, +6, +11
Colour Temp: Dynamic
Sharpness: 4
Iris: 4

How does it look: Exactly as I describe it, like an 83" CRT TV with colour and brightness (and sharpness) which pops your eyes out, ALL shadow detail is revealed, contrast isn't too bad IMHO despite my flippant comment above, the brain can do strange and wonderful things with contrast...

Memory 3 - "Best of Both Worlds"

Work in progress this, since seeing the demo PJs, I'm trying to produce a darker pic which doesn't lose the shadow detail. I've tried by starting from Memory 1 and working up, and also by starting from Memory 2 and working downwards (in terms of brightness). After much fiddling I've found that simply starting from Memory 2 and reducing the Iris to 2 gives me the best effect so far - but there's more to find I'm sure.

Factory Menu

I've also tweeked STRIPE, VCOM and NRSH in the factory menu to reduce VB. These settings are so machine specific that to publish them is probably counter-productive. The on screen test graphics are the best guide. Important: write the defaults down before adjusting anything!

Note: no filters, calibration discs etc have been used to produce these by the way, just my own preference. I may have used the THX calibration pics for Memory 2 but I've probably tweaked them further.

...PJ

Edit: PS Kopite, I like the look of those settings you list, they may be what I'm looking for in Memory 3! I'll give them a try!

Not bad settings there and im now using them as my custom gamma. but I felt the image is way to far on the red side, stick these settings in for custom colour instead of 8500k.

Should make the image look far more natural and IMO creates the perfect picture.

Cyberheater, how do you rate the picture now with the filter compared to what you did have?

I guess it would be worth a tenner to try this out anyway, but I'd be interested to know how worth it you think it was?

Thanks!

There's a huge difference.

The bulb in the Hitachi TX100 is deficient in the red spectrum. So to get a accurate grey scale at colour temparature D65 the projector is forced to reduce the blue and green light output to compensate.
This means at a calibrated D65, the overal brightness is decreased which means the contrast ratio is also impacted.
The TX100 is rated at 1200:1 contrast ratio but if calibrated to D65 without a filter the contrast ratio falls to 600:1 or less. This gives a flat dull look to the image. The blacks are not as black compared the whites. Image snap and impact is lost.

The CC40R optically compensates for the lack of red so you can push the Blue and Green levels to maximum and still have a calibrated to D65 but this time, the maximum contrast ratio is maintained at the ideal of 1200:1.

In short. The blacks are blacker, the whites are whiter and the colours are spot on, deep and satuated. It's like getting a new PJ. It's the best tenner you'll ever spend. Trust me

Cybes, thanks for that - it really has got to be done after a write up like that!

Which filter did you actually buy - I have had a quick look at their catalogue and there seem to be a number of colour correcting filters from different manufacturers?

heya cyerheater, hows it going with the filter. Did you decide on a set of settings that left a significant improvement. considering having a go myself, but just wanted to see if you thought it was worth while?
