Given the demand, I doubt you'll get one for much less than 7.5.

Rumour has it an Optoma H81 at around £4000, so I'm sure other 1080 DLPs will not be far behind.

Is anyone going to go for a Ruby, then? I've given up on single chip DLP until they do something radically different, so this makes my choice a lot simpler.

I know that some people already have theirs in some places in Europe. They should be "everywhere" this month, although supplies in all regions will be limited. If reports are accurate, £7300 is a bit of a bargain.

Hi Darko,

You will see the difference between a 1080 source and an upscaled 576 source on a 1080 res pj, most notably in background information.

What source is currently available in 1080p?
Thought we were just moving into 720p with HiDef TV around the corner.

Nope will be a real 1920x1080 chip for front projection.

See the link for a few extra details

http://www.dlp.com/about_dlp/about_d...se.asp?id=1270

I also hope they can do something about the damn rainbows. Early reports seem to suggest that the RBE has been reduced with the new DMD. I remain skeptical but you never now until the production units hit the street.

Yes I have seen all the releases, but does this mean all set will be native 1080p or only the 'premium' ones? I just feel there may be many DLPs under 1080p banner which are stictly.....? thoughts?

Now that is a very good question. Will some DLP front projectors use the 960x1080 DMDs that is used in the 1080 'wobulation' DLP rear projectors?? I've seen nothing anywhere over on Avsforums suggesting the possible use of these chips in FP but it could make for an interesting range of HD projectors going from 720P 1080W 1080P.

Who knows?? Is there any technical reason that this couldn't be done. I see no reason not. Would give DLP a more varied and competitive pricing stucture perhaps against LCD/SXRD.

There are now true 1920 x 1080 DLP chips available for front projection use. The 'wobulation' chips were restricted to rear projection tvs it would seem.

Optoma look like to be bringing out the first true 1080 projector with the releas of the H81 in January. No doubt other manufacturers will be following on in the near future.

A 4K H81 would be great, however if the picture quality is better than the Ruby which some reports from CEDIA suggest why not then ask Ruby prices for it, or even higher. For those not senstive to rainbows that want the best possible picture, 1080 single chip DLP might be the superior option to 1080 SXRD. 6K-8K may therefore be more likely but I hope not.

Always fun to speculate.

to add to speculation I feel the whole DLP brigade (of which I am a fan) have just been shot a crippling blow by Sony...

Rumour has it the Optoma H81 will be around £4000, but that's still to be seen.

I wouldn't say a crippling blow perhaps but certainly one to knock the pricing plans of 1080 DLP down a peg or two. TI are still selling thousands of chips to the massive rear projection market. Great move by Sony though, they just need to fill the large gap between the HS60 and Ruby now. Perhaps a Mercury lamped SXRD machine to really dominate the whole market.

personaly i think i would rather have >5000:1 CR Calibrated and no DI tricks.
I think this would give a better overall image and more so in brighter scenes.

also there is the brightness consideration. The ruby is a dim unit. i like the way some DLPs are going much brighter but keeping a very high contrast.
Even the rumour mill specs of the H81 put it at 1500 lumens and 8000:1 CR (not calibrated figures).

Those that were lucky enough to see the TI demos at cedia all said how awesome the images looked. Time will tell if that translates to the cheaper optomas, or even the marantzs (and judging by the quality of the H79 its not impossible).

Its just too early to make a accurate judgment on wich tech will lead. I think TI will continue its lead but price could be an issue, more so with the 3-chippers.

I rang a Sevenoaks store to enquire about stocks of the H79. It so happened that a Themescene rep was visiting, and I was able to speak to him.
He was amazed that I even knew of the H81. He didn't think it would surface in Blighty until end of Q2. He said it would priced more than the H79, but not how much more.

In respect of my specific query, as to size ( I can't accomodate a Ruby) I was told that from pics he had seen- similar to H79 but only wider.

Pics i saw of it looked much smaller. Its shaped like a sim2 now. If the H81 is a sim2 rip off for sure. still does not look as nice as a sim2 and is still white.

There were pqs up on the net back along.

Damn I was hoping that the H81 would be available early next year what about infocus have they got a 1080p planned ?
I want to go from my 4805 > 1080p so at least I will be sorted for while then because I know if I get a 720p native proj I will only want a 1080p proj when they are out its like a disease
