Sanyo Z1 browning of image on left side

I have looked at the FAQs and browsed the postings on this forum but haven't really found the answer to the following:

I have had a Sanyo Z1 for about 18 months and I am now noticing that there is a brownish cast to the image on the left hand side, particularly at the top. I only noticed it the other day when watching a black and white movie (a bit of a rarity for me), because it's not that obvious with colour.

I am wondering whether this is due to normal lamp deterioration or whether an isolated incident where my wife switched off the machine at the mains within seconds of my powering down via the remote has anything to do with it ... or whether indeed there is anything to be done to remedy the situation.

Can anyone out there help?

I have a Z1 and most of the centre of my image has a yellow cast probably caused by the Blue polarizer degrading.Maybe you have a problem with a different colour polarizer.

This can be caused by overheating it seems,I have always used eco mode and perhaps the fan speed is not high enough for prolonged use.

These can be replaced and as your z1 is still under warranty perhaps its worth investigating a repair if you think you have a similar problem.

I have decided to wait till the present lamp expires(no2 on 1000hrs) and then look for a replacement.

My Z2 exhibited almost exactly the same fault: staining on the left-hand side, more so to the top of the frame. It was still under guarantee, so I returned it to the supplier, who told me that it required an "optical clean" - which is not covered by the warranty.

I was asked if I wanted to go ahead with the repair at a cost of just over £200, or should they return the projector - in which case the charge would be an £80-odd pound "inspection fee".

I chose the repair.

Thanks for your help oneline and Bert Coules. I'll have to give some serious thought about whether to live with the problem (it's only really noticeable with a b&w image) or do something about it and maybe pay big money. If it gets worse (and I suppose it's likely to) then I will. I guess this projector is probably only worth about £500 now and £200 for a repair is a sizeable fraction of that value.

In my case, it certainly did build over time. The final impetus for getting it looked at was (a) that it really was noticeable on all sorts of material, and (b) the guarantee period was nearly up (though as it turned out, that was irrelevant).

Yes, I thought of that, too - and the fact that a replacement bulb, which will eventually be needed, is well over a hundred pounds, too. If it hadn't been for that "inspection fee" I probably wouldn't have gone ahead.

I've asked the company doing the repair to let me know just what might have caused the problem, so that with luck I can avoid it in the future.

If it were me, I'd be causing more of a fuss to get it done under the warranty. If you've used the projector as-per the instructions, you have a strong case for the fault being caused by a manufacturing defect.

Which retailer gave you that excuse?

I'll be sure to avoid them!

It's a well-known and very highly regarded specialist AV dealer. Apart from the fact that they should surely have told me about the £80+ inspection fee before opening up the projector rather than after, the level of service and communication so far has been excellent.

They should not impose a fee which they did not tell you about especially when the unit is under warranty. Why exactly is this defect not covered under the warranty? I really think you have been duped here although obviously you have not posted the full facts.

Also since I assume they consider they have done nothing wrong and you seem to trust them why will you not name them?

I agree.

This sounds like outrageous behaviour during the warranty period!

Got carried away there when I read Bert's reply.

Back to the point!

canlabmaster - it sounds like your blue polarizer has degraded. If your projector is less than 2yrs old, it's still under warranty. I'd suggest contacting the dealer you bought it from.
