Sony HS50 and 1080 input?

i use a pc as the input right now into my sony and it's set to a 1280x720 res.
this works fine via hdmi and vga.

i'm thinking about the future really and blu-ray etc and assume that they will output 1080 for their movs.

prob is i don't think it will work on my sony (unless i'm doing something wrong). basically to test, i up the res on my pc to 1920x1080 but it doesn't show it properly.

by that i mean, if i use hdmi, the image is the right size but blurry - kind of like 2-3 images overlaid over the other.

via vga - the image is clear but i only get a 1280x720 window that pans across a 1920x1080 desktop it reminds me of that happened on my old laptop when i resized the res to something higher than it could support.

to me anyway it doesn't look like my sony will take a 1080 res for some reason?

The Sony isn't a native res of 1920 x 1080, so setting your desktop to that won't achieve anything. However, the unit takes a 1080i signal fine. Have you run any of Microsofts 1080i demo's to see what happens?

I use the T2 1080i demo for testing, it looks great

i play my underworld (HD-wmv) video and thats fine (with windows in 720 res), but doesnt my pc take care of the video? i mean if i play a 320x240 avi for example - it still plays it full screen.

whats the diff between a dvd player or something sending a 1080i/p image to the hs50 and my pc doing it? does this mean if i had a BD or HD-DVD player now and i plugged it into the sony, if the movie was 1080 res that i wouldnt be able to play it?

i thought it was able to take 1080 input

If you send a 720p signal to your HS50, the projector does nothing. I'm assuming that if you send it 1080i, the projector scales it down to display the image. In other words, if you send it a 1080i image, from any source, it will accept.

I'm not sure what your concern is here, as the Sony, along with most of the current gen projectors, will accept 720p and 1080i without problems.

just worried that it wont work if i go for one of those drives when they come out.

so you're saying if i input a 1080i source then it'll show fine but downscaled, but if i have a 1080p source then i cant use it since the hs50 wont display it?

Tomos, I wouldn't worry about compatability with HD-DVD. How many 1080P displays are there out there ? HD-DVD will be compatable with the current range of digital displays whether DLP, plasma or LCD like the Sony HS50.
Enjoy your weekend, Rob.
