What is the difference between an amp and a receiver?

Please forgive my ignorance, but I have been unable to find an answer to this presumably obvious question.

What is the difference between a receiver and an amplifier, and do I need both or either, do they both do the same job?

At present my DVD player goes straight into the back of my TV.

Please help me understand which component goes where in the chain and what purpose do they serve?

Reciever just means an AMP with onboard AM/FM tuner, Just another old term being misused or misunderstood in the digital world of today
