How good is the HS50

I am currently thinking of upgrading my sony vpl-10HT to a newer projector.
Is there anyone who has experienced how good the HS 50 is and would it be a worthwile upgrade for me.
thanx.

While you are waiting for a response, try the "search this forum" facility and look for HS50 - you'll fine enough opinion to choke a horse...PJ

just dont expect sony to sort your problems out in a hurry if/when it goes wrong.
my opinion of course and i'm sure there's loads of happy hs50 owners out there.
just i'm having a really bad experience with them right now and i know i'm not the only one......
i had a bulb issue after 200 hours.
i sent it in for repair under warranty and also asked for it to have the firmware upgrade.
fair play to sony, they fixed it after a month, then advised me that it was fixed but awaiting the firmware upgrade.....
after two and a bit months i got the pj back.
but no firmware upgrade.......
so,it sat on their shelves for an extra month or so for nothing....
and now i'm being advised to deal with the service centre directly but it wont be fixed asap.
just joining the queue....
now that's unacceptable in my opinion.....
their mistake so they should fix it as a matter of urgency....
it is a good machine in all honesty.
just a shame the customer service aint so good.
good luck in your decision.
just do plenty of research first....

I've owned a VW11HT, then an HS20 and now an HS50.

I reckon when you see the improved contrast and black of the HS50 as compared with your VW10 you will be absolutely blown away. Also, unlike the VW10/11/12, the HS50 does not sound like its about to take off! In fact it is one of the quietest projectors I've yet come accross.

However the resolution on the VW10 is very good, higher than the HS50.
But if your seating postion is more than 1.5x the width of your screen, this will be a non issue and you will be astounded by what the HS50 can do.

All that said, there other inexpensive projectors that will easily out perform your VW10, e.g. a Panasonic AE700 which can be had for under £1000.
It is sometimes hard to accept that a unit you paid £5000 not all that long ago can now be so easily outclassed by brand new units around 1/5 of that.

It is true though. Go and see some of the new units for yourself.
Projector technology is moving on at an incredible rate and prices are falling all the time.

My views on the HS50 are well documented if you use the search function.

Needless to say, I've owned this projector for nearly 6 months, and have absolutely no intention of changing it in the near future.

Be careful Urban, you may end up needing to purchase a new lamp!...PJ

The HS50 is a superb LCD PJ inho. It is a different class to the older 10HT.

Doesn't have the memories and such like of the older units but has MUCH improved contrast and noise levels as mentioned. I like it.

If you can stretch to more dosh though I'd seriously look at the near silent optoma h78 dlp...providing you don't see rainbows.

being honest,i have just been exceptionally unlucky......
apart from having to have my bulb replaced after 200 hours i was really pleased with the pj.
i just wanted to make the point that sony service centre haven't been too good/honest regards time scale in fixing my problems...
i'm now reluctant to re-send the pj to them for any firmware fix for fear of waiting yet another 2 months.
the way i'm going there'll be a newer model out before i get to use it again
take my problems with a pinch of salt though as i'm sure the majority of people have got trouble free hs50's......

Good as Ever!

I am still very pleased with the HS50. I have been watching it now for about 6 or 7 weeks most evenings. By this amount of time on my first projector I had began to notice some flaws in the picture. e.g vb and colour patches in the picture. Also jagglies and tearing.
But the HS50 has none of the above! Still as impressed as the first time I put it on.

Cannot believe how resonable a price it is compared to what was around a few years ago.

I tried DLP but even machines 3 or 4 times the price gave me a literal headache and bad eyes.

I would recommend it to anyone.
