I am thinking about forgetting LCD and going the CRT route as my LCD Seleco seems to have disappeared! What CRT projector can I buy second hand for £1000 or less and what would installation of such a beast be? Any thoughts on where/who to buy from or any ideas would be great! (oh yeah, it has to be quite small as well, I know I don't ask for much!) <img src="smile.gif" border="0">

You should have no problem with the less than £1000 mark which should get you an Barco 800/801 Sony 1270/71 Both have digital adgustments for geometry/convergence from the hand control. These are essentila really for 4x3 and 16x9.

Define small - No CRT will be described as compact.

Hi Roland,

Having seen the photos from the install you did for Phil (THX TEX) I think the Barco might be too big! Do you know the size of the Sony? My cellar is only 10ft x 10ft and 6ft high.

6ft is a very low ceiling and 10ft will not get you a very big picture with any projector.

I estimate if you put a CRT projector on the floor in a coffee table arangement you could almost get a 6ft wide picture.

Sony is a bit shorter. but not much different

Hi Roland,

I know my room isn't very big and really I should use an LCD but the quality isn't great and my Seleco has been playing up something rotten and it has put off LCD quite a bit. CRT seems to be more reliable and better picture. The only thing is with my room being so small I need the floor space for seats. If I put a CRT on the floor I will only have enough room for two chairs and I really wanted a two seater as well. Do you think the Sony would be ok mounted on the ceiling or are there any other smaller footprint CRTs out there? Thanks for all your time and help! <img src="wink.gif" border="0">

CRT projectors by their nature are large. but as you say worth the space.<br />one thing I have done in the past and showed at the hifi show, is to mount the projector pointing at the ceiling with a surface coated mirror at ceiling level at 45 deg. problem with this design it can give you too big an image. in fact it would be 8ft wide! but this is going to blow your budget

I think I'm going to have to re-think the whole idea! I am not too happy with using an LCD projector but I guess its my only option.

i have the same problem (only a small room).i went with an electrohome ecp they are quite small as far as crts go . smaller than the barco beasts .they are a bit higher though 52cm wide 60cm deep 43cm high

i have ceiling mounted mine anyway which is the way to go in a small room if you ask me

there is one other way to go though so you can have plenty of seating .<br />build a table to put the pj on and put it behind a sofa with the pj firing just above your heads (i have seen this done in a cinema)

then you could have a chair ech side of the pj and a small sofa in front

just an idear anyway

crt is realy worth the efort . if you can squeeze one in i would if i was you . i did

Ceiling mounting is not an option IMHO in a 6ft high room unless you foam pad it.

If compactness is your primary issue, you may wish to consider one of the older sony models (VPH 1020QM). I have one of these mounted in a small room with a ceiling not much higher than your own. The projector is mounted flat against the ceiling with a home made mounting system. This is probably one of the smallest crt's at 59 cm long, 51cm wide and 27cm high. These projectors appear to be for sale at various prices between £250 and £1900 on the net. I suspect you could get a good one for around £500.

spares can be found . you just have to get them from the us .curt palm over at avs can usualy be relyed on

i love my baby anyway and think she produces a great pic .easy to setup aswell having inbuilt scempflug (i wish i could spell)no washers to mess with

i still think that the best bet .if you are still thinking of crt . is to mount it on some sort of platform shooting over your head

I agree with Alan,yes the Sony VPH-1020QM will be a perfect choice.

There are NO fans inside this projector and very easy to set up.

i do think you may be better with somthing else . it may be small but from the info i have found it is suposed to only have 5.5 inch tubes and will not accept a progresive scan imput pc or anything. so some of the big advantages of a good quality pj are not avalable

after all size is'nt everything . on this site you will find install manuals and that for a lot of the sony pjs . so if you are gona go for a sony it may be a wise thing to go download a few and do a bit of reading to see if you think you can install it yourself

if you are going to get somthing like that though i don't rely think it is worth the major expense of a pro install . there value being so low .

i would'nt go out of my way to get one . if you see one realy cheep though and you are happy with a straight vid imput then go for it

i don't realy think size is that important . you may be a lot happier giving over a few extra inches and getting somthing you can connect a line doubler up to . i'm sure you would be a lot more impressed at the resulting pic <img src="smile.gif" border="0">

Yes the Sony 10** series were small, but it they went out of production ages ago, along with its other "take the cover off and converge using little knobs" like the Barco 600 ,Esprit, NEC and Electrohome range*.<br />True it did not have fans but it whistled like it had lost a dog and at 15Khz that can give you aheadache.<br />No aspect control and only composite video input.

These were built before the ANSI standard but these poor beasts would not make it into double figures and even at 10% peak white only got to about 450 lumens and that was new.

(these types of projectors have very little in the way of spot supresion they had trouble killing the beam if something failed in the scan circuits. Check the centre of the tubes very carfully for pin prick tube burns)

Happy to take your money to install it but I bet that costs more than you pay for the projector.

I wouldn't pay more than £200 - 500 for this type of projector*. An that would be for ablemish fee tube face.

Not a serious HC projector.

i just want to ask which electrohomes are an analoge convergence ect.? was there a modle befor the ecps .if not what mod numder did they change at? i thought they all had didgi controls

i'm just interested (i was thinking of getting another later for another room and don't want to get an analoge one if i can help it)<br />thanks<br />simon

ps gee listen to roland he knows best . get a pj with didgital contols if you can .they usualy have a reset so if you run in to probs when setting up you can just reset and start again (it's a lot easyer to sit in a nice comfy chair with a remote than being in the back of the unit when it comes to setting it up)

I converge my Barco regularly and stand right next to the screen when I do it.<br />I can't imagine converging any other way.

Hi matey, i would go for a Sony VPH1031Q its a smallish unit can handle most inputs including component with a mod PCB & the UK versions even have a scart lead connection on the front. They can do data & video & are compatible with Line doublers etc.

I got an amazing bargain on mine - my mates old gaffer had it up on his rooff at work, he had *never* used it & he sold me it in mint nick for £175 including a 10m Scart lead !!!

I doubt there will be many about in this nick but you should be able to get a 1031/0142 from this guy quaturbo@dwave.net delivered into the UK from the USA for about £400 - £500 - He offered me a VPH1272 which is a real beast for £750 delivered in guarenteed good condition.

Check out his eBay auctions becuase finding a good Sony in the UK will be hard

yep i know the one . it's the ecp2000 aint it . it's a shame i idear did'nt catch on if you ask me .

i can just imagin the size of a 9incher design built like that though .now that would be a beast .

Ok ok. I am intrigued about this Sony vph-1020q. How big or more importantly small is it? I've looked on the web for information but I guess its quite old. Does anyone have any info/pictures of the vph-1020q or an idea where I might be able to get one from? Also would it need installing by a qualified installer i.e Roland or is it a job I might be able to manage? So many questions and such little time. Lets hope I won't have to buy another LCD pj. <img src="wink.gif" border="0">

You could also consider a DWIN HD700.<br />It´s the most compact "modern" CRT there is I believe. It´s older brother, the HD500 (also very compact) can be had for a reasonably low fee. The Electrahome 2000 was a Single lens CRT. It was known a Cyclops at the time.<br />The green pointed forwards and the red and blue came in from the sides. It was huge, ugly and didn't work but a fantastic idea well B4 it's time.

If any one could get one I would love it for the museum and just to have a play.
