Dear all,

Looking for some guidance here.... I've owned a Panasonic PW42 plasma for about 3 years now - really happy with it, great picture and it's used every evening. However, (like most gadgets) I don't quite get the thrill of watching a film on "the big screen" so much, just seems a bit "normal!". Rather than trading in the plasma for a 50" model, I'm thinking that for the ocassional big screen movie, a projector could be the answer, where the screen would simply pull down infront of the plasma...

Does anyone else do this?

Will the picture be anywhere near as good as the plasma?

What's better - DLP or LCD?

My budget is max £1K

exactly how I have my setup. Pioneer 43" plasma on the wall with a 67" motorised Grandview w/s in front.Works well.(or did before dropping my PJ)

personal preference I think.

I have a 42" Sony and my 6ft projector screen pulls down in front of it... for me thats ideal.

I use the tele for reguar programme viewing and use the PJ for movies and football. My livingroom isnt dark so PJ during the day is ok but you have to shut the blinds & curtains which isnt ideal when you have vistors in!!

When the livingroom is in darkness I would say it gives off just as good a picture as the TV.

All in all... I would take both (tv and pj) everytime!

Side by side and I can watch the footie in big screen with headphones and at the same time the missus can watch Corrie

I have a PW5 and a BENQ 5120 - which is a great little DLP for approx £600

Phil,

Don't want to put you off but IMHO a £1k PJ won't match the PQ of your Panasonic plasma (depending on which one you have) , particularly when the image is so much bigger via the PJ.

Well I've just won the bid for an ex-demo BenQ PB6200 on ebay - £485, so I'll soon find out! If it's not up to the job, then it'll be back on ebay!

I would say that a good projector ( and there are many now up to £1500) will match and in some cases better a plasma's image. Panasonic do make fine Plasma's though so matching would be closer than bettering it's image.

Sure 3K would allow for a pretty good system, but that's nearly 10x what I've just spent - doubt it would provide 10x the enjoyment!

Depending on how happy I am with the results, thinking about putting in a false ceiling and concealing an electric screen (to come down infront of the Plasma) and some kind of electric drop down for the projector itself (is there such a thing available??)

On the evidence I've seen I totally agree. Fine looking devices yes, but a decent PJ puts them in the shade IMHO...PJ

exactly what i was thinking, £1500 PJ to taste (£800) for elec screen £400 for active video switching and cables etc) £2.7k a "bomb bay" drop for PJ is expensive, a small LCD or DLP will sit unnoticed on ceiling anyway
